Winnie was 16 years old when she came to South Dakota by bus/train to stay with her uncle Chris Hoyer for the summer, on his farm, north of Timber Lake. That is where she first met Ken Ward, whose parents were a neighbor to Chris. Winnie returned to South Dakota for two summers. During her high school years, Winnie was a very active in basketball and tennis. Winnie graduated from Moss Point High School in 1947. After graduation she traveled to Europe with her uncles for 4 months.

Winnie returned to South Dakota and married Ken Ward on November 20, 1948, at the Baptist Church in Timber Lake. They lived with Ken's mother until August 1949, then they moved to LaPlante, SD where Ken worked for the Chicago Cattle Company. In 1950 they moved south of Dupree, SD near Cherry Creek and continued working for the Chicago Cattle Company. In 1951 Ken and Winnie established their ranch 12 miles north of Timber Lake. Winnie loved God, her family, extended family, special friends and neighbors.

Winnie enjoyed gardening, canning tasty hot pickles, raising chickens, riding horseback, playing in the snow, wood working, crafts, and making many special quilts for her home and family.
