William Ronald Pothast, was born August 30, 1942 to Ronald C Pothast and Anna Marie Goff Pothast in Marshalltown, Iowa. Bill was the oldest of 5 children. Bill passed December 4, 2015 at the age of 73 in Eagle Butte S.D.
Bill said some of his early memories were of going to his Grandfathers bakery. This started a lifelong habit of Doughnuts and chocolate. He attended school through the 9th grade, then started farming by helping his father and uncle on their family farms. In 1960 he moved to South Dakota to start ranching with his Aunt, Ethel Nielsen. He eventually purchased and expanded the ranch several years later. While in Dupree, Bill met Patricia Tindell in May of 1964. They were then married September 22, 1964. They raised 3 children, Katharine, Lee and James Pothast.
Bill was a lifelong farmer/rancher. One of his greatest joys was seeing his winter wheat being harvested in the field. Although I believe his greatest joys in life's later years was when he would take the afternoon off to take his granddaughters fishing. Bill also enjoyed getting the opportunity to help neighbors and visiting with the wonderful neighbors that he was fortunate enough to have in this area.
He is survived by his wife Patricia and all three children. Also surviving are Bill's three Granddaughters, Jaimie, Ashley and Kaitlin, 3 great granddaughters Eva, Rylee and Alli, brothers Ronald Fred [Barb] Pothast of Polk City, IA. Dennis Charles and Mary Pothast of Melbourne, IA and sister Margaret Ann and Rob Tiernan or Marshalltown, IA.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Douglas Pothast.
