Obituary

Funeral services for William W. McLean age 70 of will be 11:00 AM Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Wakpala Community Center. Burial will be in the St. Bede's Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. All night wake will begin at 5pm on Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Wakpala Community Center. William passed away January 5, 2016 at his home in Wakpala.

He was born on March 11,1945, in rural Wakpala to Henry McLean and Jane Eagle. He attended Wakpala school, class of 1963. After graduating high school, he went on to serve in the U.S. Army. After returning from the Army he worked at various job on Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Reservation. In his younger years William broke many horses. In his later years he went on to attend Sitting Bull College where he completed his general studies. He was one of the few tribal members who was fluent in the Lakota language.
After retirement he enjoyed chopping wood, taking long walks to visit his turtle pond, attending church at St. Bede's Catholic Church in Wakpala, dancing his famous "Mountain Man Shuffle", visiting family, especially his grandchildren, and friends at their homes and at the community center, as well as visiting with deer and pheasant hunters from around the country.
William was known as a man with a generous heart who would help anyone he could. He was also known for his sense of humor. He liked to tease and joke with everyone he spoke with.
William is survived by his nieces, Monica Lind, and Madonna Lind; his nephews, Lawrence "Lambi" Lind, Gilbert Lind, Lars (Jae) Lind, Andrew Lind, and Russell Lind, nieces and nephews; Jeff Cadotte, Tyron Cadotte, Bernard Cadotte, Mary Cadotte, Judy Cadotte, Cassandra Cadotte, Pat Yellow, Don Yellow, Ron Yellow, Morris Yellow, and his grandchildren, Miles, Draven, Nearra Cadotte, and Brianna Cadotte as well as numerous other grandchildren.
William was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Barbara Cameron, Angeline Schock, and Henrietta Lind; and his special cousins, Milo Cadotte and Charles Cadotte, nephews, Drew Cadotte, Chuck Cadotte Jr.
