Obituary

Funeral services for William "Scotch" Gilbert, age 79, of Promise will be at 10 AM CT, Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the Ascension Episcopal Church in Blackfoot. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will begin at 2 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Scotch passed away Saturday July 20, 2013 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.

William (Scotch) Gilbert was born September 23, 1933 at the Cheyenne Agency to Ethel Thompson and William A. Gilbert. He attended Promise and Whitehorse Day Schools and Wakpala. From there he entered the US Army and served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1960. He worked construction for many years throughout the United States. He married Lavina Pauline Frost in 1959 and to this union five children were born, Cheryle, Bill, Scottie, Cherie and Trina. After several years of construction work, he moved back to Promise area where he ranched and became a CHR. He then cooked at Promise Day School until his retirement.

He married Carol Beesley on February 3, 1987 and to this union he acquired 3 more children, Verla, Vernon and Christy.

Scotch enjoyed ranching, country music, playing the harmonica and guitar, rodeos, demolition derby's, and the SIGHTS and sounds of the Sturgis Rally. Scotch is widely known for his jokes, teasing and colorful story telling.

Scotch is survived by his wife, Carol, son, Bill (Christy) Gilbert of Mobridge, daughters; Cherie Gilbert of Pierre, SD and Trina Kostad of Helena, MT, Verla (Chad) Drown of Salem, Vernon McLaughlin of Mobridge, Christy (Bill) Gilbert of Mobridge. One sister Mary Jewett of Whitehorse and one brother; Guy Gilbert of Promise, SD. 18 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving are his 3 loyal cats; Cleo, Coal and Baby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Will, and infant daughter Cheryle, step-father; Sibby Marshall, one brother Arthur Marshall and son, Scottie Gilbert,
brother -in-law Albert "Pinky" Jewett and sister-in-law; Polly Gilbert.
