Walter I. Hager was born on June 27, 1935 in Alva, OK to Iro A. and Alice (Palmer) Hager. He attended school at Alva and after school he started farming with his dad in Oklahoma and Colorado. In 1955 they moved to McIntosh, SD and he began to farm and ranch on his own as well as helping his dad. In 1978 he had the opportunity to purchase land in Leoti, KS which fulfilled his desire to farm back in the area where he had started farming with his dad.
He married Virginia (Overseth) Siverson on December 1, 1978. Together they continued to farm and ranch in the Dakotas and Kansas. In 2007 the farm and ranch in the Dakotas was sold and he semi-retired to Mobridge, SD. He continued going to Kansas to farm and ranch until his passing.
Walter loved farming and ranching. It wasn't work to him it was his hobby. He was never happier than when he was in his John Deere tractor. He enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors over the tailgate of the pickup, spending time at auctions, sale barns and teaching his grandkids about farming and ranching.
Walter is survived by his wife, Virginia, three stepsons and their families, Marc (Janine), and children, Matt (Kate), and Chad; Gary (Amy) and their children, Taylor, Seth and Shane; Todd (Tammy) and their children, Virginia and Logan; two great grandchildren, Chloe and Fiona, two brothers, Wayne (Carol) Hager and Everett (JoAnn) Hager; two sisters, Betty (Jim) Hodgson and Ioma Yandell.
