Private family funeral services for Violet Mae Martin age 85, of Mobridge will be Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Public visitation will be Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church. Violet passed away Sunday, August 30, 2020 at Mobridge Regional Hospital in Mobridge.

Violet Mae Martin, daughter of William and Christina (Schmidtgall) Hockesson, was born in Gettysburg South Dakota on April 06, 1935.

Violet, the oldest of two children attended school in Gettysburg, SD and was later employed at the Sunset Cafe & Ringneck Cafe. In 1952, she moved to Yankton, South Dakota where she was employed at the South Dakota State Hospital. During this period, she met her husband Merle Roy Highland who also worked at the hospital. In 1953 they returned to Gettysburg and were united in marriage in Pierre, South Dakota. In 1955 they relocated to Mobridge and raised their four children. After her husband Merle's passing in 1962, she spent the next six years working at the Trail Cafe, VFW Club, Rainbow Cafe, and Arcade Bar & Grill while raising five children.

In 1968 she married Robert Kenneth Martin in Mobridge. While in Mobridge, they started the Red Owl Grocery Store and operated it for a couple years. In 1981 they purchased the Washette Laundromat and later sold it.

While her husband worked on the Milwaukee Railroad, Violet decided to go back to work and was employed at Gibson's and Alco. After her husband RK passed in 1997, she continued to work in retail at Loopy's, Runnings, and The Family Dollar and then retired in 2016.

While in retirement she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In addition, she enjoyed crocheting, gardening, reading and visiting with friends.

She is survived by her children, sons, William & Scott Highland of Rapid City, SD, daughters, Sheila (Tim) Schmidt of Herreid, SD, Pam (Lyle) Schneider of Bismarck, ND, Roberta Martin of Aberdeen, step-children, Barb (Dan) Keough of Lakewood Colorado & Becky (Scott) Welch of Portland OR. In addition to (12) grandchildren (8) step-grandchildren and (11) great grandchildren, (14) step-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her mother, father, sister, nephew, and step-daughter.
