Violet Katherina (Speidel) Hertel passed away on July 17, 2018, at the Sunset Drive Nursing Home in Mandan, ND.
She was born on June 10, 1924, in Logan County, ND, four miles south of Gackle. Violet was born in a sod house to Mathais and Emma (Guttschmidt) Speidel. When she was a year old, the family moved to a farm 14 miles NE of McLaughlin, SD. This was her home until she was married. She went to the Little Hertel School her first eight years and graduated from McLaughlin High School in 1942. On November 3, 1943, she married Elmer Hertel at the Hope Lutheran Church twelve miles NE of McLaughlin, SD. They lived with Elmer's parents for one year and then bought the Frank Sentfner farm across the road from the Hertel farm, where she lived the rest of her life.
Violet was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and served many years as a Sunday School teacher, officer of Women of the Church and the Church choir. Her hobbies were fishing, crocheting, embroidery and the sewing of many quilts. Some of the quilts were sewn for herself, her daughters and her grandchildren. Many quilts were sewn for Lutheran World Relief. In 1987, her eyesight began to fail, and she had to quit sewing as she couldn't thread the needle anymore.
Violet was a very good cook. For bake sales, she used to make fresh glazed donuts, and they were always the first items to go. She made many German dishes from both the Hertel and the Speidel side of the family. Her home was always a gathering place for friends and family
Violet and Elmer were blessed with four children, one boy and three girls. Donald Elmer Hertel, who took over the two farms when Elmer retired. Linda Lu (Howard) Maxwell of Sioux Falls, SD. Sharlene Ann (Gailen) Hiatt of Bullhead City, AZ. Gladys Faye (Stephen) Wallace of Londonderry, NH. Violet had eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, and one brother, Ruben (DeLoris) Speidel.
Violet was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, her parents, Mathais and Emma, one granddaughter, one great grandson, and two brothers, Edwin and Arthur.
