Funeral service for Violet Berndt age 81 of Herreid will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Herreid Baptist Church. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 5 PM Wednesday with a prayer service at 7 PM at the church. Violet died January 7, 2018 at 5:00 pm at the Mobridge Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Violet was born October 30, 1936 in Emmons County, ND, daughter of Fred and Christine Schaffer. When she was very young the family moved to Pollock where she attended school. She married Lauren Berndt January 22, 1954, in Herreid and worked with Lauren side-by-side running their farm and dairy operation while raising their four children Ken, Lyle, Carol, and Cheryl.

Violet loved to garden and can, and was a wonder cook. Most of her dishes were created without recipes. She was confirmed in Lutheran Church in Pollock. After her marriage, she was baptized in the Herreid Baptist Church. Violet was very active in the church, teaching Sunday and Bible school and was involved in the women's mission fellowship.

Violet is survived by her husband Lauren of Herreid and children – Kenneth (Tammie) Berndt of Mandan, ND, Lyle (Tammy) Berndt of Dickinson, ND, Carol (Pat) Berndt Campbell of Eagan, MN, Cheryl (Steve Biel) Berndt Biel of Java, SD, as well as grandchildren – Marie (Damon) Wehr, Brenda (Adam) Hayes, Travis (Jessica) Berndt, Casey Carter, Billy Carter, Nicole (Danny) Haller, Alexis (Matt Walker) Berndt, Heather (Stephen) Greenwood, Paige Campbell, Taylor (Josh) Varghese, Colin Campbell, Molly Campbell, 16 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Verda Schaffer, Verna Berndt, and Emma Berndt, brother and sister-in-law Leland and Della Berndt and a number of nieces and nephews.

Violet is preceded in death by her brothers, Herbert Schaffer, Gus Schaffer, and Wally (Linda) Schaffer, sisters, Helen (infancy) Schaffer, Margaret (Don) Dean, brothers-in-law, Clinton Berndt, Harold Berndt, sisters-in-law, Eunice (John) Leno, Iva (Dan) Orth, Sena (Godfred) Bauer.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Herreid Baptist Church Woman's Missionary Fellowship.
