Obituary

Funeral services for Viola Brockel, age 90, of McLaughlin will be at 2 PM MT, Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the UCC Church in McLaughlin. Burial will be in the McLaughlin United Methodist Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be starting Friday at 2 PM CT at the funeral home with a prayer service at 7:30 PM CT. Viola passed away Monday, November 8, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.

Viola (Eberhart) Brockel was born May 9, 1920 to John & Elizabeth (Kary) Eberhart south east of Eureka, SD. At a young age her parents moved to McLaughlin, SD on a farm north east of town. Viola attended Lincoln School, and graduated from McLaughlin High School.

In 1940 she married Rueben Brockel, they had two girls, Betty and Nila, in addition to raising her family, she helped her husband whenever she was needed on the farm.

She was active in her church as a Sunday School Teacher, and served on Christians Women Fellowship for many years. She served a term as President of the Women's Society, active in 4-H as leader, worked election boards and county fairs. Her hobbies were gardening and raising a lot of flowers. Always sharing her produce with many friends.

Viola also cut many pictures for the first graders for over twenty years. The children really enjoyed the animals and western pictures something that Viola really enjoyed too.
She baked the children a batch of chocolate chip cookies at the end of each year.

She is survived by daughters; Betty (Roger) Opp of Rapid City and Nila (Casper) Kraft of McLaughlin, 5 grandchildren, Susan (Evan) Deneris of Salt Lake City, UT, Stuart (Deidre) Opp of London, England, Stacey (Mike) Arens of Sandy, UT, Carmen (Carson) Kostelecky of Sidney, MT, Kim (Cody) Eaton of Dupree, SD, 9 Great Grandchildren, two sisters, Clara Stotz of Hugo, MN, and Emma Rau of Rapid City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters Lydia Banek, Martha Aman, Irene & Edna in infancy.

Casketbearers are Claude Kissick, Dean Banek, George Chalmers, Tom Fischer, Virgil Comeau, Joe Harrison, Donnie Kraft.

Honorary Bearers are David Harrison, Sr., John Harrison, Ray Goehring, Warren & Gladys Friez, Marvin Pleinis and All Staff at the Golden Living Center.
