Funeral services for Trent Walking Elk, 29, of Kenel will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Kenel Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Kenel Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm Friday, April 4, 2025, at the Kenel Catholic Church with a prayer service starting at 7 pm. Trent Walking Elk passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Trent Lane Walking Elk was born on August 8th, 1995, to Carrey Flurrey and Vernon Walking Elk in Mitchell, SD. and this is where he spent the first 6 Years of his life. He loved helping his Grandma Gayle with her animals and trying to out fish his uncles every chance he got.

Trent later moved to Kenel, SD with his father and grandmother, Elaine. He attended Mission School in Fort Yates, ND where he received his first communion. Later attending Wakpala Elementary then Standing Rock Middle and High School. In 2014, Trent welcomed his first eldest son Trey Vern, later being blessed with Tadd Warren in 2019 and again in 2022 with River Joseph. Being a dad to his boys brought so much joy to his heart, whether it was teaching them how to fix something or how to get away with the next prank. Spending time with his boys meant the most to him. If he wasn't with his boys, he kept busy fishing, hunting and doing anything outdoors he liked. Trent was a jack of all trades, an artist, mechanic, carpenter, roofer. If there was something he didn't know he was eager to learn. If he had one super power it would be that no matter the song that got played or came on the radio, Trent knew the lyrics and would bust out in song, just to prove it.

Trent is preceded in death by his father, Vernon Walking Elk, paternal Grandfather, Virgil Walking Elk, maternal grandparents, Ray Lanier and Buddy (Fern) Degen, sister, Mackenzie Degen, uncles, Maynard St. John, Merle St. John, Bobby St. John, Dean St. John, Tad Walking Elk, Verl Walking Elk, aunties, Eunice St. John and Lavonne St. John.

Trent is survived by his sons, Trey Walking Elk, Tadd Walking, River Walking Elk, grandmothers, Elaine St. John, Gayle Sheppard, Mother, Carrey Flurrey, Uncles, Sterling St. John, Corey Degen, Lance St. John, Casey Degen, Kerby St. John, Courtney Stork, Aunt Christa Stork and Brother David Degen. God Children Draven Sal Cla, Ty Left Hand-Twohearts, Jazzilynn Rough Surface, Charlie Ann Rough Surface and Soren Walking Elk.
