Thelma Eleanor (Landsverk) Peacock LeBeau was born October 9, 1927 in Fosston, Minnesota to Aren and Tilda (Vollen) Landsverk. She spent her formative years growing up on the family farm with her brother Oliver and sisters Agnes and Gudrun. She graduated from Fosston High School in 1944 and went on to attend college at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she graduated with a degree in teacher education.
She began her teaching career in Forest River, North Dakota where she taught for one year before taking a job in Wagner, South Dakota as a Social Studies teacher. It was there she met her future husband, John Walter Peacock. They were married on December 22, 1951. To this union were born 8 children: Russell, Michael, Randy, Charles, Jerry, Sandi, Mark and Nancy.
The family moved around for a few years to California and back to Newell, South Dakota before Thelma finally came to Eagle Butte in 1967 which she would call home for the remaining years of her teaching career and her life.
Thelma enjoyed her teaching career in Eagle Butte, teaching history and social studies for 25 years before her retirement in 1992. She kept a very busy schedule with her school work and following her children to all of their sporting events and a wealth of other school activities. Her house was always full of kids and there was never a dull moment in the Peacock household.
She married her longtime friend and neighbor Martin LeBeau in Eagle Butte in 2002. She enjoyed his company and the time she spent sitting and visiting with him and spent eight wonderful years by his side.
Her hobbies included sewing, and she remembers a time when she made most of the girls school clothes and a suit for each of the boys. When the kids were grown and married she enjoyed making quilts for her many grandchildren. Thelma also enjoyed reading and could always be seen relaxing with a good book or a crossword puzzle. She loved to collect recipes and try them out on her family and friends. She was an active member of the United Congregational Church of Eagle Butte and served on the Timber Lake Historical Society board, the Eagle Butte City Council and as a Red Cross blood drive volunteer. Thelma had a rich life with many family and friends always by her side.
Thelma is survived by her husband Martin LeBeau of Eagle Butte, SD; sons Russell (Becky) Peacock of Bison, SD; Randy Peacock of Eagle Butte, SD; Charles (Becky) Peacock of Mobridge, SD; Jerry (Eileen) Peacock of Eagle Butte, SD; Mark (Patty) Peacock of Dupree, SD; and two daughters; Sandi Peacock of Albuquerque, ND; Nancy (Rick) Schrempp of Ridgeview, SD.
