Memorial services for Sylvia Noisy Hawk-Sandland 75 of Thornton, Co. and formerly of Little Eagle, SD will be 10:30 AM CT, Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Little Eagle Blue Gym. All night wake will begin at 8PM on Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Blue Gym in Little Eagle. Sylvia passed away January 2, 2015 in Castle Rock, CO. Funeral arrangements are with Kesling funeral Home of Mobridge.
Sylvia Iona Noisy Hawk-Sandland was born in Little Eagle, SD, on November 9, 1939 to Edward Noisy Hawk and Nancy Low Dog. She attended Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. After completing school, she attended cosmetology school in Colorado. Returning to South Dakota, Sylvia married Leonard Sandland in 1961,where they made their home north of McLaughlin on the family farm. Upon Leonard and Sylvia leaving the family farm, she resided in Selfridge, ND raising five children; Lois, Dallas, Sand, Mike and Marlys. She worked for Standing Rock Youth Ranch in Fort Yates, ND for several years. She also enjoyed dropping in on friends and neighbors to have coffee and visit. She lived in Selfridge, ND until 1985 and then moved to Denver, where she remained until her passing.
She returned to Little Eagle every year (very rarely missing a year) for Memorial Day celebrations in the area. She enjoyed picnicking, and site seeing and traveling in the Rocky Mountains. She loved visiting family, cooking, gardening and attending powwows. She was also a very dedicated Denver Broncos fan.
Sylvia is survived by her common-law husband; Jim Trujillo, Denver; five children, Lois Sandland, Fountain, CO., Dallas Sandland, Fargo, ND, Sandi and husband, Jim Smith, Peoria, AZ., Mike and wife, Christine Sandland, Selfridge, ND and Marlys and husband, Billy Bigbow, Indiahoma, OK., 10 grandchildren; Jeremy Meisel, Josh Meisel, Lee Meisel, Yorishia Buell, Bo Buell, Missy Bigbow-Nuefer, Sherie Barker, Michael Sandland, Chloe Sandland and Sage Sandland; 10 great-grandchildren; (Jermey Meisel) Evelyn and Henry, (Josh Meisel) Frances and Curtis, (Yorishia Buell) Abigail and Dylan, (Bo Buell) Mara and Madeline, (Sheree Barker) Skylar, and (Missy Bigbow-Neufer) Justice Michael; two special nieces, Cheryl Noisy Hawk and Jolene Curley; a special nephew; Edward (Pat) Noisy Hawk, and many other grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Noisy Hawk and Nancy Low Do- Noisy Hawk; her grandfather, Henry Low Dog, her grandmother, Agnes Red Legs-Low Dog, her grandmother; Jenny Noisy Hawk, her grandfather, Heksela Noisy Hawk; six brothers; Leonard Noisy Hawk, Gilford Noisy Hawk, Everett Noisy Hawk, Dallas Noisy Hawk, Roy Noisy Hawk and Jacob Noisy Hawk, and three sisters; Lorraine, Violet and Verna Noisy Hawk.
