Memorial services for Steven Merkel age 72, of Mobridge, SD, will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 12, 2020, at the New Freedom Baptist Church in Mobridge. Steve passed away Sunday, August 30, 2020 at Mobridge Regional Hospital. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

Steven J. Merkel was born March 10, 1948 to Eldon and Lavonne (Wientjes) Merkel at the Mobridge Hospital. He grew up in Mobridge and attended school in Mobridge until graduation. On May 26, 1968 he married Judy Jung and were married for 52 years. They lived in California for a few months where he worked for a house mover before moving back to Mobridge.

He worked construction for 38 years until he retired. He made a lot of friends in those 38 years of traveling.

He was into the sheep business for a number of years and doing some haying, baling and whatever he could do outside puttering around, which was something he thoroughly enjoyed. He lived his life to the fullest.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, one son, Dean, three grandchildren, Shawn, Sydney, and Isaac, three sisters, Judy (Merkel) Jilek of Lake Havasu, AZ, Sheri (Merkel) Larson of Weston Lakes, TX, Eldonna (Merkel) McArthur of Gillette, WY, one brother Ben Merkel of Martinsburg, WV, brother-in-law Glenn Jilek and brother-in-law Wayne Larson, one sister-in-law, Maryann Kraft, Aunts and Uncle, nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Shayne and one daughter, Shawn.

He will be missed by his family and his many friends.

We will be together again.
