Mass of Christian Burial for Stephan A "Steve" Volk, 78, of Herreid will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, September 19, 2016 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Herreid. Burial will be at St. Peter and Paul Church Cemetery in Strasburg under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Sunday at 6 PM with a prayer service at 7:30 at the church. Steve passed away Thursday, September 15, 2016 at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Stephan A. Volk was born on November 29, 1937 in rural Emmons County, ND, to Anton and Rofina (Bachmeier) Volk. He entered into the US Army in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1957. Steve married Jo Ann Wolf on September 2, 1959, in Herreid. They made their home in California from 1959 to 1961 before moving back to Herreid to farm.
Steve had a love for farming and his family. He enjoyed quarter horses, watching westerns and Fox News. He was a lifetime member of the AM VETS and a member of the Herreid American Legion Post. Steve had a strong faith and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church where he served on the church council. He also was on the Board of Directors for the Herreid Equity Exchange.

His passing has left a gaping hole in the Volk family that can never be filled. He was the rock and the glue. He was who was turned to with every question from what crop to plant for the boys or what was wrong with a vehicle for the girls. Not a decision was made without Pa's approval. He taught his kids to work hard, love hard, and, above all else, pray hard. His bigger-than-life presence will forever be missed at every single holiday, family gathering, and special event. He loved having his family all around him. That was when he was the happiest.

Steve is survived by his wife, Joanie of Herreid, seven children, Steve Jr. of Herreid, Robin (Tom) Ryckman of Pollock, Greg (Shelly) of Linton, ND, Jack (Sue) of Herreid, Bob (Tracy) of Herreid, Buffy (Brad) Schuetzle of Mandan, ND, and Mari Pat Volk of Lincoln, ND, fourteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, two brothers, Victor Volk of Monticello, MN, and Ray Volk of Linton, one sister, Florence Gartner of Salem, OR.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Rofina, parents-in-law, Joe and Martha Wolf, grandson, Tommy Ryckman, brothers, Gilbert, Albert, James, Roger, Martin, Rodney, Alex, and sister, Elizabeth.
