Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Visitation will start at 6 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM Thursday, at the church. Shirley passed away, Thursday, June 6, 2024, in Bismarck.
Shirley was born April 27, 1942, to John and Martha (Moser) Ackerman in Eureka, South Dakota. She grew up on the family farm north of Pollock, SD. She attended school in Pollock and graduated in 1961. While working at a restaurant in Mobridge she met Raymond P Reiss in the spring of 1962. They were married on October 3, 1964, in Mobridge, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen, SD until they purchased The Klein Café in Trail City in October 1965 and renamed it The Trail Café. Which they operated until 1980. During this time, they were blessed with 3 children, Kenneth Ray, Luanne Marie, and Michael Ray. They sold the café and moved the family back to Shirley's hometown of Pollock, SD where Ray worked as the elevator manager. Shirley enjoyed a variety of jobs while raising her children in Pollock which included attending all of their sport activities, which brought her great joy as she loved to socialize. Shirley had many special talents that included crocheting and making Afghans for all of her nieces and nephews when they graduated from high school. She enjoyed sewing, baking, playing cards putting puzzles together, and spending time with family and friends.
In 2002, they moved back to Trail City where she enjoyed keeping busy until health issues said it was time to retire. In February of 2012, she was blessed with a granddaughter and earned the name "Nana". She was so proud of Gracie and was sure to let everyone know of all the things that Gracie had accomplished and was involved in. Thank goodness for facetime as they visited almost daily. In December of 2023, she moved to the Edgewood on Dominion in Bismarck until her passing. There, she was able to enjoy making new friends, being the social butterfly she was she knew everyone by name and had many special friends in the short amount of time she spent there. We were all blessed with having more time to spend with Shirley. She was her happiest when her family was together, especially when Michael and Tamara were able to make it from Pierre, SD for the holidays, her birthday, Mother's Day and Memorial Day. Taking her out for special dinners or activities. Gracie was granted special bonding time with nana as she was so close and spent a lot of time visiting her at Edgewood.
Shirley was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the altar society. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose.
Shirley is survived by her husband Raymond, daughter, Luanne (Dan) Schonert, Wilton, ND, son, Michael (special friend Tamara) and granddaughter, Gracie Rae Schonert. Brother-in-laws Ralph (JoAnn), Marvin (Joan), Harvey (Gloria), Sister-in-law Arlene (Tom) Wiggins, bonus grandchildren; Ethan (special friend Katie) Schonert, Joe (Jamie) Schonert, Amber (special friend Jordan) Schonert, bonus great-grandchildren; Kya and Klara Schonert. Many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her son Kenneth Ray, parents John and Martha Ackerman, sister Janice (Jerry) Scharberg, Father-in-law and Mother-in-law Adam and Frances Reiss.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Edgewood on Dominion in Bismarck for the wonderful care that was given to Shirley. She truly enjoyed the time she got to spend there.
