Shirley peacefully passed away Monday, October 12 at Five Counties Nursing Home in Lemmon, SD.
Shirley Ann Volmer was born November 3, 1943, to Bill and Anne (Ruben) Volmer in Chamberlain, SD. Shirley’s childhood years were spent in Mitchell, where she was the fourth of seven children. She graduated from high school in Draper, SD.
Following a successful blind date with Reuben Finkbeiner, the two continued dating and were married on April 20, 1963. They first made their home in Spearfish, and in 1966 settled in Isabel where they would raise their family and become permanent community members. Together, they were blessed with three children: Lynn Marie in 1964, followed by Rodney Ray in 1968, and Lacey Ann in 1985.
With roots planted in Isabel, Shirley did not hesitate to get involved in her community. She was proud to be a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dakota Daughters, Isabel Ambulance Service, Birthday Club, and Isabel Booster Club. Over the years she held jobs at the Isabel Super Value, Isabel Hardware, and the Dewey County Auditor’s Office. Work was not something that intimidated Shirley. Her passion for the church led her to help with a major restoration and remodel of St. Mary’s in 2010-2011. She was very proud of all they accomplished in the beautiful church so it could continue to serve generations to come.
Shirley valued conversation with friends new and old, and enjoyed any opportunity to catch up with friends and family or meet new people. She could often be found visiting at the cafe over a cup of coffee. In later years she liked being able to camp in Mobridge with Lacey and Lynn, going for walks and relaxing around the fire.
Shirley loved her grandchildren – Holly, Patrick and Kelcey. Ever the adventurous spirit, she shared many special moments with them, including trips to Hawaii, Disney World, Las Vegas, and shorter excursions to the Black Hills. She was very proud of her 8 great grandchildren and treasured being able to watch her grands and great grands grow up, cheering them on in their activities as often as she could.
Shirley is survived by her daughters Lynn (Jim) Maher of Timber Lake, and Lacey Finkbeiner of Isabel; Grandchildren Holly (Tee) Burress of Piedmont, Patrick (Kasey) Maher of Timber Lake, and Kelcey (Clinton) Lawrence of Trenton, ND; 8 Great Grandchildren: Gabby, Tripp and Croix Burress; Crawford, Rowan and Maren Maher; Trey and Leva Lawrence; and Grand-Corgi Moxie; Sisters Mary Ellen Weber, Betty Newton, and Linda (Del) Templeton; Brothers Robert (Wardene) Volmer, and David (Pam) Volmer.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Reuben, her son Rodney, her parents Bill & Anne, her sister Nancy, and brothers in law Rodney Monson, Darrel Newton, and Nick Weber.
