Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Russell "Ray" Brehmer, age 74, of Lantry will be at 10 AM MT, Friday, February 4, 2011 at All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. Burial will be in Mossman Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 6 PM on Thursday with a Rosary service at 7 PM at the church. Ray passed away Monday, January 31, 2011 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Ray was born on June 17, 1936 in Hartley, IA to John Merrett "Slim" and Dolly (Leth) Brehmer. He grew up in Iowa until the age of 8 and then moved with his father to Oregon and then back again to Iowa after 2 years. In 1951 at the age of 15 Ray ran away from his home in Iowa to South Dakota where he lived with Bill and Wally Maupin for several years. In 1963 Ray started working as a hired hand for Shorty Holloway until 1991. He stayed on the ranch and continues to ranch until the time of his death. Ray enjoyed the ranching and the rodeo lifestyle. He liked to rope and was a barrier judge in his later years. Ray enjoyed playing cards and teaching his grandchild bad habits. On February 13, 1960 Ray married Elaine Pearman at the Methodist Church in Gettysburg, SD, and to this union three children were born; Trish, Rusty, and Shawn.

Ray is survived by his wife Elaine Brehmer of Lantry, SD; children Trish (Mike) Herren of Spearfish, SD and Rusty (Shelley) Brehmer of Dupree, SD; grandchildren, Dusty (Tavey) Herren and Ty Herren of Gillette, WY, Shawna (Brian) Perry of Worland, WY, Cole (JaeDee) Herren of Spearfish, SD, Jill (Danny Marshall) Brehmer of Lantry, SD, Russell (Larissa Martinmaas) Brehmer of Dupree, SD; great grandchildren, Rozlyn Herren of Gillette, WY, Jayden Marshall of Lantry, SD, Kyler Herren of Spearfish, SD and Braiden Perry of Worland, WY; brother, Ronnie Brehmer of Hartley, IA; half brothers Richard Leth, Denny Leth, and Jerry Leth of Hartley, IA; sister Sally Steffen of Cleghorn, IA; adopted family Jack, Lisa, Justin, and Chelsey Veit; brothers-in-law Rusty (Karen) Pearman, Frank (Judy) Pearman, Bob (Rosie) Pearman; sister-in-law Bonnie (Dwayne) Altman, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son Shawn Brehmer, granddaughter Jessie Brehmer, brother Jack Brehmer and half brother Terry Leth, parents John Brehmer and Dolly Leth, and sister-in-law Jackie Pearman.
