Funeral services for Ruby Walker, age 87, of Gillette, WY and formerly of Selfridge, ND will be Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 10 AM, CT, at the Selfridge School Gym. Burial will be at the Selfridge Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 5 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the Assembly of God Church in Selfridge. Ruby passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013 in Gillette.
Ruby Viola (Buechler) Walker was born October 19th , 1925, to Michael and Kathryn(Bollinger) Buechler in Bowdle South Dakota. She was the fifth child of nine. Ruby attended school in Mahto, South Dakota and eventually moved to the family farm nine miles south of Selfridge North Dakota . It was during this time she met the love of her life George William Walker. George and Ruby were married in McLaughlin South Dakota on November 26, 1946. To this union 18 children were born. Ruby was a wife, mother, teacher, gardener and cook as well as a talented seamstress.
Ruby would share her love of music in song with George who would accompany her on his guitar. They sang in their church as well as at many family gatherings. You could hear the love in their harmonies when they sang. Ruby was not only a teacher to her own children but to countless others through the head start program at Porcupine N.D. She touched many young lives over the 24 years that she worked there as a certified childhood development teacher.
Throughout the years, feeding a family as large as hers Ruby made countless homemade breads, noodles and kuchens as well as authentic German family favorites that have been passed on for generations. Every year Ruby would plant a beautiful garden and the fruits of their labors were canned pickled and preserved to feed her ever growing family.
Ruby's life was not all work and no play she loved to go to the river to fish and just sit around the campfire and enjoy the company of her family. The priceless memories from these trips will always be held near and dear in the hearts of her children. She also enjoyed a good game of dice as well as winning which she usually did. Ruby was also a very talented crochet artist there are hundreds of delicate heirloom pieces gracing the homes of family and friends.
The true gift of Ruby's life is the 18 children: Charlotte(Clem) Rohrich, Charlene(Eric) Block, Gerald (Spring) Walker, Melvin Walker, Myron (Beth) Walker, Maynard (Nora) Walker, Corla (Sidney) Weigel, Rodney Walker, Miles (Vanessa) Walker, Michael Walker, Cathy (Larry) Ballinger, Merle(Sheila) Walker, Mathew (Laurie) Walker, Marvin (Shelly) Walker, Cheryl Feist, and Colleen (Antonio) Bianachi, 35 grandchildren and 24 1/2 great grandchildren that will carry on her legacy. She is also survived three sisters: Bernice, Luella, and Nervella
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband George W. ; two sons, Marlin and Martin; one sister; three brothers; three grandchildren; one great grandchild; and one son-in-law.
