Obituary

Memorial services for Ruby Hollenbeck, 82, of Trail City will be at 11 AM, Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. There will be a prayer service Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at Kesling Funeral Home at 7 PM. Ruby passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck.

Ruby Elaine was born to Emanuel and Hildegarde (Miller) Schulz on September 26, 1940, at their home in McLaughlin, SD. Later the family moved to a farm northeast of McLaughlin. There she rode the bus to school in McLaughlin. Later the family moved into the motel in McLaughlin, which they operated. Ruby graduated from McLaughlin High School. While in school she enjoyed cheerleading and playing trombone in the band. Upon graduating, Ruby was an operator for the local telephone company until the lure of the big city brought her to Minneapolis as an operator for Bell Telephone. While working for Bell Telephone, she lived with her aunt and uncle. After only a few months, Ruby moved to Mobridge where her parents had recently moved, and she worked as a bookkeeper for a local appliance store. Following that job, Ruby became employed at Citizen's Bank as a teller/bookkeeper. Working with numbers and keeping books was Ruby's calling.

On September 2, 1966, Ruby and Bob Hollenbeck were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mobridge. They were married for 56 years. After Ruby and Bob were married, they moved to Rolla, Missouri for a year while Bob finished his degree in engineering and then they moved to Hutchinson, Kansas. While Bob worked for Cessna Aircraft, Ruby worked as a teller/bookkeeper for a local bank. After three years in Kansas, Bob's parent's place became available and Ruby, Bob and their daughter Terri moved to the ranch northeast of Trail City, SD. While Bob was living on the ranch full-time, Ruby and Terri lived in Mobridge during the week so Terri could attend school and Ruby worked full time at Citizen's Bank in bookkeeping and training. On the weekends, Ruby and Terri joined Bob on the ranch. After Terri graduated from high school, Ruby lived on the ranch full time.

Ruby enjoyed the family gatherings and cooking big meals when the grandkids and later the great grandkids would come to help with ranch work. Ruby liked showing the grandkids the way of ranch life. One of her great pleasures was driving out to the pasture in springtime in the evening to watch the baby calves run and play.

In spite of a number of hospitalizations due to heart valve replacement, Ruby had a full and satisfying life.

Ruby is survived by her husband Bob, daughter Theresa (Jack) Walth; grandchildren Jamie Honeycutt, Robby (Shelly) Walth, and Hayley (Danny) Nickels; two sisters Delores (Darrell) Zacher and Norma (Mark) Brunick; seven great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, four great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Trail City Volunteer Fire Department, the Timber Lake Library, or the Timber Lake Historical society.
