Obituary
Mass of Christian Burial for Rodney "Pudge" Mitzel age 62 of Herreid, will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at St. Michael's Catholic Church of Herreid, SD. Interment will be in the St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be 5PM to 7PM on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the church with a prayer service at 7PM. Rodney passed away Friday, July 7, 217 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.
Rodney "Pudge" Mitzel was born Aug. 15, 1954 to Archie and Rita (Schaefbauer) Mitzel at Mobridge, SD. He was a lifetime member of St Michael's Catholic Church and was an altar server there for many years. Pudge graduated with the class of 1974.
Pudge was a great sports fan and followed the local school sports teams for many years. He would ride the fan bus and developed many friendships in surrounding towns. He traveled every year to Aberdeen with Science Fair students. He would ride his bike uptown daily to get the mail and visit in the local businesses.
He took pride in keeping his yard neat and mowed and doing gardening.
Pudge was his Mother and Fathers rock, caring for them in their later years. He rode with his dad many times to check crops, or the farm. They also attended many auction sales, horse or livestock auctions. At home he helped his Mother with cleaning, cooking and they made hundreds of Rosaries that were shipped all over the world. They all enjoyed Sun afternoons of playing gin and listening to polka music or going to local casinos to do some gambling.
Pudge moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Herreid for a brief time in 2015 and to Aberdeen in July of 2016 to live with Don and Vicki Mitzel. This became his new home and he enjoyed being at the shop most days doing cleaning jobs and mowing. Assembling puzzles was a great past time for him.
Pudge had a big heart and was willing to help anyone. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and the community.
Rodney is survived by his brothers, Don (Vicki) Mitzel of Aberdeen, Frank (Deb) Mitzel of Artas, SD, Mylo Mitzel of Egan, MN, and Dennis (Loretta) Mitzel of Herreid; his nieces and nephews, Peggy Mitzel, Robert Mitzel, Chad Mitzel, Stacey Lewis and Casey Kuck; his great-nephews, Brody, Gavin, Jeslyn, and Brayson; numerous aunts and uncles.
Rodney was preceded in death by mother Rita, on Jan 16, 2015 and father Archie on Sept 17, 2015.
