Mass of Christian Burial for Robert Scherer, 80, of Timber Lake will be 10 AM Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Burial will be at Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Tuesday at 5 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the church. Mr. Scherer passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.
Robert Clemens (Bob) Scherer was born to Clemens and Anna (Kamperschroer) Scherer on June 12, 1930 at the homestead 3/4 mile west of Timber Lake. He attended grade school at Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from TLHS in 1948.
In his early years, Bob flew as a local volunteer for the Civilian Air Patrol. Bob met the love of his life Mary Lou Becker in 1947 and they were married in Eagle Butte, SD on June 13, 1949. His famous words to Mary Lou were, "Love you babe."
Bob and his father worked the farm together until 1959, when Bob bought and took over the farm. In 1958 Bob became interested in the electrical business and started up his own business Bob's Electric in 1961. In 1962 Bob bought the pool hall from Ralph Grage and opened Bob's Recreation. He ranched and operated the pool hall for about five years.
In 1973 Bob was elected to the Board of Directors at Moreau-Grand Electric in Timber Lake. He remained on the board for ten years. Bob also served on the Dewey County Crop Improvement Committee and the Board of Directors for the Isabel Community Clinic. Bob served as a trustee for the Holy Cross Catholic Church and was a member of the church choir during his high school years and throughout his life. He was the first lector at the Holy Cross Catholic Church and was a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Bob was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Bob and Mary Lou were members of the Timber Lake Garden Club.
Bob is survived by wife Mary Lou and their children Dick (Renee) Scherer, Lenore (Jim) Smith, Joe (Sheila) Scherer, Patricia (Bert) Keller, Cindy (Steve) Gebhart, Marsha (Jerry) McAdams, 12 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Marie Enright and Margaret Caswell and two brothers Gerhart Scherer and Clarence Scherer.
