Funeral services for Robert "Bob" Baer, 73 of Glenham will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. Burial will be at 1 PM MT, Monday Nov. 8, 2010 at Black Hills National Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be on Thursday starting at 2 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the funeral home. Bob passed away on Monday, November 1, 2010 at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND.
Robert Ronald Baer was born on January 22, 1937 on the family farm 6 miles north of Hoven, SD to Theodore and Lydia (Riede) Baer. He grew up on the farm and attended country school until moving to Mobridge as a teenager. He attended high school in
Mobridge before moving to North Dakota to help on various farms. Bob entered the US Air Force in 1956. While in the Air Force he served as a radar operator and an air traffic controller and also served in Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force in 1976.
Bob married Shirley M. Sippert on July 13, 1958 in Mobridge. Four daughters were born to this union, Lynda, Karol, Karen and Kathryn. While in the military they made their home in numerous places including, Mississippi, Oklahoma, California, Philippines and Ellsworth Air Force Base. Following his retirement they made their home in Mobridge for a time before moving to Washington. While in Washington he worked as an aircraft mechanic. In 1980 they moved back to Mobridge for a number of years then moved to Oklahoma for a year. They returned to Mobridge in 1986 where Bob owned and operated Baer's Upholstery, he also worked at the Mobridge Medical Clinic and Collin's Clinic as maintenance, Polar Gas, and Bridge City Engineers. He learned how to fly in 1966 and then served as a flight instructor teaching many people how to fly including his wife, Shirley. In 2004 Bob and Shirley moved to Glenham where they have since resided.
Bob was a member of the Moose Club, American Legion and served as president for the local chapter of the AARP. He loved music and was in a couple of bands playing guitar and singing and in later years ran a karaoke machine to entertain people. He built remote control airplanes and did numerous wood carvings and enjoyed fishing and camping.
Bob is survived by his wife, Shirley of Glenham, daughters, Lynda (Tim) Protzeller of Granite Falls, WA, Karol (Larry Olson) Baer of Beresford, SD, and Kathryn (DuWayne) Schick of Selby, two grandsons, four granddaughters, one great granddaughter, brother, Edmer (Lois) Baer of California, sisters, June (Bill) Imberi of Mobridge, Lila (Alvin) Reuer of Wyoming, Erma Grimm of Oregon and LaVerna (Melvin) Flemmer of Aimes, IA.
He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Karen, three sisters, Hulda Baer, Alvina Berg and Dorothy Allmendinger, four brothers, Alvin, Lawrence, Norman and Leonard.
