Rinel was inducted into the United States Army on September 4, 1942 and trained as an Infantry machine gunner. He served his country in England and the WWII battle fields of France. He received a shrapnel wound and was awarded a Purple Heart. Since he could speak German he became an interpreter for the German soldiers imprisoned in a POW camp. Rinel received his honorable discharge from the service on January 13, 1946 as an Army Corporal.

Rinel returned to the Java area to farm with his father and brothers. On August 21, 1949 he married DeLila Stiegelmeier in Java. They moved to a farm one mile northwest of where he was born and continued to raise cattle and grain for 35 years. Rinel and DeLila retired in 1984 and moved into a new home in Mobridge, a home that Rinel lived in until the time of his death.

His retirement was spent traveling and fishing on the Oahe with his wife, helping on his son-in-laws farms, visiting friends, playing cards, gardening and maintaining one of the most beautiful yards in Mobridge. His love of cattle, farming, and of the land remained with him until his passing. Riny was part of a regular coffee bunch in which he could share his wit and humor and pass on stories. His family was very special to Riny, and he was so very special to them.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a past member of St. Paul Lutheran in Java; which he served on the Church Boards in both churches and served on the Kundert School Board. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Mobridge Moose Club.
