Richard E. (Dick) Travis was born in Mobridge, SD on November 27, 1925 to Floyd and Opal (Earenfight) Travis. With the exception of his freshman year in high school when he, his parents and siblings (Bob, Helen, and Jerry) lived in Mitchell, SD, Dick was proud to call Mobridge his home.
Dick graduated from Mobridge High School in 1943 where he participated in football, basketball and track. He was Tiger King in 1942. After high school graduation, Dick joined his older brother, Bob, in Los Angeles, CA to work for Lockheed Aircraft. From his perspective, he had hit it big, earning 75 cents an hour.
Shortly after his 18th birthday, Dick returned to Mobridge to enlist in the US Navy. After completing Morse code training and Japanese code special training, he was
assigned to Guam to intercept Japanese coded radio signals. He was honorably
discharged in May, 1946.
Dick married Doris Larson, the girl of his dreams, on June 15, 1949 after a courtship that included a letter writing campaign to Doris when she was attending college in
Spokane, WA. Dick and Doris had three children, Marsha who lives in Minneapolis, MN with her husband Curtis Juliber, Dick who lives in Beresford, SD with his wife Judy and Curt who lives in Eau Claire, WI with his wife Trisha. Dick and Doris were blessed beyond description with nine grandchildren, Ryan, Austin, Alyssa, Claire, Nate, Phil, Lauren, Kayla and Jake. Nothing was more important to Dick than his family.
Throughout his working career, Dick was a local businessman. Initially, he, along with his Dad and brother Bob, owned Travis Food Market which became Piggly Wiggly
grocery store. After the store was sold, he was the owner/proprietor of the Bowl Arena lanes. He completed his business career with an approximate 30 year tenure selling crop insurance to farmers in a 200 mile radius of Mobridge. Dick then retired which allowed him to maximize his time with his family and extend the winter stays in Tucson, AZ.
In his leisure time, Dick was passionate about golf, and in his younger years, he was a dominating force on the area circuit logging many tournament wins and countless
trophies. He was an avid reader. The path between his home and the AH Brown Public Library is a well worn trail.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen and grandson Ryan.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the AH Brown Library Building Fund, the Mobridge Regional Hospital Foundation, or Trinity Lutheran Church.
