Richard R. McLaughlin, age 71, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at his home in Wakpala, South Dakota.

Rick McLaughlin was born on May 2, 1955, in Rochester, Minnesota. As a young man, he moved to Manitou Springs, Colorado, where his daughter Molly was born and where he began his plumbing career, eventually becoming a licensed master plumber.

Later, Rick made his home on his grandfather's allotment near Wakpala on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. In 2000, he married Robbi Iron Wing, and they shared many years of love and laughter until her passing in 2022.

Animals were a constant and cherished part of Rick's life. Over the years, he raised pigeons with the Pikes Peak Homing Pigeon Association, ranched buffalo and cattle, and cared for many animals, including donkeys, horses, ponies, peacocks, geese, ducks, chickens, cats, and dogs.

He also had a deep love of music and enjoyed sharing his favorite songs and artists with others. His taste ranged from classic country and rock to reggae, and he especially loved the Grateful Dead.

Rick will be remembered for his humor, his laughter, and his independent spirit. He was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorial service details will be announced at a later date.
