Obituary

Memorial services for Rick Godkin age 70 of Mobridge will be 10:30 AM Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 3, 2015 beginning at 3:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Kesling Funeral Home. Rick passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Richard A. Godkin was born October 15, 1944 to Allen and Luella (Johnson) Godkin in Hastings, Nebraska. Rich grew up and attended school in Creighton, Nebraska. In 1956 he moved with his family to Mobridge where he attended school.

Rick worked at a saddle shop in Miles City, Montana and also worked for Delzer Construction of Selby, SD. Rick was drafted into the US Army at Fort Bliss, Texas and served in Vietnam in 1966 and was honorably discharged in June of 1968.

On October 28, 1969 he married Carol Shillingstad in Aberdeen, SD. They then moved around doing construction in South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Minnesota and then moved back to Mobridge in 1993 and started his career at Dakota Trails Construction in Selby, and later began working with BestWay Traffic until December 2014.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sergeant of Arms of American Legion, served on the City Council and Walworth County Commissioners.

Rick enjoyed having coffee and visiting with all his friends. He enjoyed Rodeo's, going to his farm spending time with his horses. He especially enjoyed spending time with all his grandsons.

Rick was a very social and kind hearted man, he never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife; Carol of Mobridge, one daughter; Shannon (Tony) Del Grosso of Aberdeen, SD, 3 grandsons; Nick, Brandon and Jack of Aberdeen, 2 brothers; Wayne "PeeWee" Godkin of Pierre, SD, Val Godkin of Mobridge and sister-in-law Karen Godkin of Mobridge, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Pogo & Linda Lutz of Mobridge, Jim & Billie Shillingstad of Mobridge and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son Randy, 1 sister Dorothy Godkin and brothers Gary, Lance and Rory.
