He married Mary Jane Ducheneaux on February 7, 1963. To this union their children, Teri, Kelli, and Lyle, were born. They moved to White Horse, SD, in 1965 when they joined a partnership with their cousin, Melvin Anderson, and began their ranching operation.

Richard loved visiting family and friends, and he also enjoyed having Mary Jane cook for all who came to their home.

Richard adored his grandchildren and was thrilled to have all of them call him "Pappy".

Richard's faith in the lord was strong and these are some words that he lived by: "Life is not made by dollars or by men that respect you or by lots of large friends or by lines on a page just for you. Life is your minutes made in the Name of Jesus, your most prized possession!"
