Funeral service for Raymond Sandmeier, 83, of Mobridge will be 10:00 AM Friday, December 30, 2016 at United Congregational Church of Mobridge. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 1:00 PM followed by a prayer services at 7:00 PM at Kesling Funeral Chapel. Ray passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Rapid City.
Ray was born on July 10, 1933, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Voegele) Sandmeier on the home farm near Bowdle, South Dakota. He attended country school through the 8th grade and later received his GED diploma. He passed away surrounded by his family in Rapid City, SD, on December 24, 2016.
Ray and Janice Miller were united in marriage on May 13, 1956. After their marriage, Ray went to serve in the U.S. Army and Janice lived with her parents until he was honorably discharged. When he returned they lived in Selby for a short time and then moved to Mobridge where they made their permanent home.
Ray started his career working for Holzworth Construction. That led him to work for Morrison's Appliance Store. After that he started his electrical career and went to work for Quenzer Electric. Finishing his working career, he worked several years at Mobridge Regional Hospital as the maintenance supervisor.
He was a member of Grace UCC Church for 40 years and served on the church board. He was extremely active in singing at church services and other church functions. He helped out with anything the church needed. When Grace Congregational Church closed, he became a member of the United Congregational Church until the time of his death.
Some of his hobbies included building and flying remote control model airplanes. He was very helpful to anyone wanting to learn about this hobby. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He was also a member of Bridge City Coin and Stamp Club for many years. In his early years, he enjoyed spending time with the boys coaching during their baseball playing years, and later with Brenda's daughters and their rodeo activities.
Ray is survived by 2 sons - Kevin (Sharon) Sandmeier and Tim (Shellee) Sandmeier, both of Rapid City, SD; and his daughter - Brenda (Mike) Steiger, Mobridge, SD; grandchildren - Jenny (Josh) Schweppe, Rapid City, SD; Chris (Stephanie) Sandmeier, Volga, SD; Sarah (Todd) Tucker, Box Elder, SD; Ryan Sandmeier, Rapid City, SD; Brooke (Damon) Lappe, Box Elder, SD; Melissa (Josh) Shoop, Rapid City, SD; Megan Steiger, Rapid City, SD; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Adeline Stadel and Emma Olson, and 1 brother Art Sandmeier, all of Mobridge, SD.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, 2 brothers – Adolph and Ruben Sandmeier, and 1 sister – Edna Huft.
