Obituary

Funeral Service for Phillip Farrell, Jr., age 61, of Wakpala will be at 11 AM Wed. May 11, 2011 at Wakpala Community Center. All night wake begins Tues. at 5PM at the Wakpala Community Center. Burial will be in the St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Mr. Farrell passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at his home in Wakpala.

Phillip Harry Farrell, Jr. was born November 19, 1948 to Minerva Bone Club and Phillip Farrell, Sr. He attended school in Wakpala and Eagle Butte. While going to school he lived in the dorms that the school supported them with. When Phillip turned 18 he got a job that took him many places, often times leaving him to camp out in his car or tent. In 1972 he went to United Tribes Technical College for Police Science while there he received his GED and also became security for the UTTC campus. Phillip met Nola Taylor in 1974 and to this union they had one child; Vanessa Dawn Farrell who was born on January 18, 1974.

After finishing college at UTTC, Phillip went back to Ft. Yates to become a dispatcher and jailer, and also a police officer for a brief time. After coming back to Wakpala he became a construction worker. Working construction took him all over the state, he would pack his bedroll, tent, thermos, and the biggest coffee cup ever. Phillip was a flagger while working construction, he enjoyed getting the chance to meet people from all over the country while working there. With all of his jobs, he also served the people of Wakpala on the Local District Council for a couple of terms, housing representive, tax commission, vice chairman of the elderly committee. Phillip was also a active participant of "The Defenders of the Black Hills". With all this he enjoyed working with the youth and was very proud of his nieces and nephews, the children of Maurena, Yvette and Minnie always made him proud of their accomplishments.

Phillip is survived by his daughter, Vanessa Dawn Farrell, one grandson Barret Taylor, one great-grandson Xander Taylor all of Wakpala, 3 brothers, Nathan Wells of Wakpala, and Frank and Richard Four Bears of Minneapolis, MN, 3 sisters, Becky Wells, Beatrice Four Bears both of Wakpala, and Julie Four Bears of Minneapolis, MN, maternal aunt Rebecca Left Hand, maternal uncle Joe Bone Club both of Bellingham, WA, paternal aunts, Roselyn Sandland of rural McLaughlin and Stella Guggolz of Little Eagle, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren to numerous to mention.

He was preceded in death by his mother Minerva Bone Club Four Bear, father Phillip Farrell, Sr., brothers Tom Wells, Chauncey Four Bears, Jr., Kenny Four Bear, sisters Virginia Farrell, Josephine Wells, uncles Cecil Whitesell, Don Sam, aunts, Roselyn Sam, Rena LaFramboise, Edna Good House, Genevieve Spotted Horse, maternal grandparents Harry and Annie Bone Club.
