Pauline (Petersen) Hammrich was born on December 22, 1923 in Mina SD to Ervin and Stella Petersen. She lived in Mina for a few years before moving to California. Pauline and her mother moved back to Mina after Pauline's father passed away when Pauline was eight years of age. Her mother remarried Harold Williams and moved to Aberdeen. To this union two daughters were born Joan and Ione. Pauline completed her schooling in Aberdeen and attended Northern State University where she received her teaching certificate and started teaching in 1943. She started teaching county schools in the Ipswich area. While teaching in the area she met Ernest Hammrich at a pie social and they where married on June 11, 1945 in Ipswich, SD. She taught in county schools, Ipswich , Roscoe and Eagle Butte Public School before her and Ernest moved to Mobridge, where she taught 6th grade for 26 years, until her retirement in 1989. She taught for a total of 43 years and up until her death she would have former students stop her and talk about how they liked her as a teacher, except for when she would read a book to them and stop for the day right in the best part. When they would ask her age she would tell them to figure it out, she said she came over on the Mayflower. Pauline took a few years off from teaching in the late 1940's to start a family. Her and Ernest's children where all born in Ipswich, SD. Ervin Hammrich was born in March 1946, Vernon Hammrich in April 1948, Ree (Ellen Marie) Hammrich in January 1950 and Richard Hammrich in April 1952. Ernest traveled a lot for his business and in the summer when Pauline was not teaching she and two kids would travel with him. The next trip the other two would go. Pauline wanted her children to learn as much as they could about different things and different places, so she felt these trips where an extension of their education. The two kids that were left home would stay with Grandma Hammrich on the family farm.
