Paul passed away October 29, 2012 at Mobridge Regional Hospital in Mobridge, SD.
Paul was born March 6, 1929 in St. Paul, MN the first child of William and Clara (Ashbach) Arndt. He was baptized in St. Paul. Later his parents moved to
Jamestown, ND where he attended grade school. He was confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Jamestown. His high school years were spent at
Northwestern Lutheran Academy (NLA) in Mobridge, SD. After graduation he worked on farms at Thunder Hawk and Lemmon, SD.
On March 26, 1950 he married Laila Rabenberg at St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Glenham. He and Laila farmed northeast of Glenham for 50 years. Paul was always interested in trucks , tractors, and machinery. He would read and study about innovative methods and technology in farming and put to use what he had learned.
One of his joys was to purchase a new Freightliner semi to haul grain. Besides, hauling his own grain, he'd haul for other farmers, too. In later years, as the land was rented out, he and Laila used the truck to move pastors and teachers to new positions all over the country. They spent many memorable miles on the road.
Paul was a firm believer in Christian education. He taught Sunday School and served on many boards at church. For many years he was part of the governing board of NLA. All of his children attended Zion Lutheran School in Mobridge.
The five oldest graduated from NLA like their parents. Because the Academy closed in 1979, the youngest daughter graduated from Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School in New Ulm, MN.
Paul was instrumental in establishing an area Lutheran high school. Great Plains Lutheran High School opened in Watertown, SD in 1996. Within a few years, GPLHS was able to build a dorm and classrooms, thanks in part to Paul and his earth-moving equipment.
Paul is survived by his wife Laila; children: Kathy (Terry) Krause of Clear Lake, SD, Elaine (Fred) Klingbeil of Oconomowoc, WI, Doug (Liz) Arndt of Watertown, SD, Bev (Dave) Lemke of Superior, WI, Nick (Rhonda) Arndt of Lexington, KY and Kim (Jeff) Orth of Herried, SD. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Rhoda Arndt of St. Paul, MN, and Ruth Misgen of Faribault, MN.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his step-mother, and two granddaughters.
