Omer Walter Wessel was born on July 4, 1924 in Eureka to August and Alwine (Krockel) Wessel. He grew up on the family farm near Mound City. Omer attended school in Herreid and graduated from Herreid High School in 1942. Following school, he started farming and ranching, which he continued to do all his life.
Omer met Holly Goldade at a dance in Mound City. They were married on November 27, 1949, in Bowdle, SD. Omer said the 2 dollar marriage license was the best investment that he ever made. The couple was married for 63 years 2 months and 22 days.

After their marriage, Omer and Holly moved to the Wessel farm, which he remained on until March of 2015 when he went to live at the Selby Good Samaritan Center. He had a great love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His grandchildren would love to come over to the house and play out in the yard. Omer stated that he never had to mow the lawn since the grandchildren would play
ball in the yard, keeping the grass low.

Omer loved to dance, play cards, hunt, put up hay, take care of his sheep and cattle, and play baseball which he was very good at in his younger days. He was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather, who always had an easy smile and quick wit. He will be greatly missed, but the world will continue to celebrate him with fireworks for his birthday every year.

Omer is survived by his son, Dean and wife Barb of Mound City; daughter, Deb and husband Dean Roebuck of Selby; grandchildren, Shawn Wessel and wife Amanda of Mound City, Justin Wessel and wife Michele of Denver, NC, Dr. Misty Anderson and husband Bob of Valley City, ND, Kari Borns and husband Nick of Hartford, SD, Darcy Fiedler and husband Tom of Selby, SD, Dusty Nisbet and husband Andy of Mobridge, SD; 17 great grandchildren, Derek Stahlman, Connor Fiedler, Tori Fiedler, Keaton Fielder, Luke Fiedler, Kara Wessel, Carson Wessel, Spencer Wessel, Elizabeth Wessel, Katherine Hollas Wessel, Autumn Anderson, Austin Anderson, Grant Anderson, Alexa Borns, Aubrey Borns, Ashlynn Eve Borns and Cash Henderson, sister, Vivian Zimmerman and also his nursing home family, the staff and residents which he was very close with.
