Mass of Christian Burial for Oliver Brown Wolf, age 88 of Eagle Butte, will be at 9 AM MT, Monday, June 4, 2012, at the HV Cultural Center. Burial will be at 2:30 PM at Black Hills National Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. An all night wake will start at 7 PM Sunday at the Cultural Center. Family and friends will meet at the 4 mile junction at 5 PM. Oliver passed away Monday, May 28, 2012 at the Eagle Butte IHS.
Oliver Phillip Brown Wolf (Descendant of Woman Who Lives With The Wolves) was born on February 4, 1924 in Ziebach County to John and Mabel Dora (Lee) Brown Wolf. He was the first grandson of his family.
Oliver attended the Cheyenne River Old Agency School. At 18 yrs old,he enlisted in the US Army. He was promised a high school diploma when he joined the Army, this was fulfilled with a diploma from the Cheyenne Eagle Butte High School in 2001.
While in the military, Sergeant Brown Wolf was part of the US Army
42nd Infantry Division as military intelligence, scout, demolition of bridges, etc. Oliver and his group liberated the Dachau Concentration Camp. Oliver and Sergeant Munsell captured General Hermann Goring. For his service Oliver received three bronze stars and was honorably discharged in March of 1946.
On January 13, 1951, Oliver married Ethel Brown Dog in Chicago IL and they had two sons Cedric and Bruce. Oliver and Ethel adopted a daughter Evelyn Beck and nephews: Barry Mann, Tex Hall, Russell Means, John Finn, and Dennis Banks. Oliver worked for the US Forest Service,
BIA, IHS, and 25 years as a Veteran Service Officer. He also helped started the Cultural Center, Veterans Clinic, and the International
Sundance.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #308 and #42 Rainbow
Division, National Commander of the VFW, National Aide-de-Camp, Save Our People, AIM, Grey Eagle Society, Minnecojou Cultural Society and was an active participant of his Lakota Sundance Religion and Lakota
way of life. Oliver enjoyed reading, pipe making, chopping wood,gardening, and tending to cemeteries for his ancestors and family.
Oliver is survived by: his son Bruce Brown Wolf of Eagle Butte SD, two grandchildren Yvette and Craig of Canada, nephew/son Michael Running Wolf (Florence) of Birney MT, grandson's Michael Jr., and granddaughter Michelle Running Wolf; adopted daughter Evelyn Beck of Anchorage AK (and her four children Ernie, Kurt, Bobbie, and Evvie);sister Kayane Flyte-Lyons of CO, and many grandchildren, nieces,nephews, and cousins he considered special.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ethel, son Cedric, brother Leroy, and sister Charlotte.
