Burial will be at the UCC Cemetery in McLaughlin under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be at 3 PM Friday at the funeral home with a prayer service at 7 PM. Norman passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.

Norman was born April 24, 1927, to Otto and Lydia Schneider near Mahto, South Dakota, the oldest of six children. He grew up on a farm and attended grade school at Mahto where he first learned English. He was able to continue schooling until the eighth grade when he had to quit to help his dad run the farm.

He was drafted into the army near the end of WWII and spent his service in Germany putting on rodeos for the local people. He often joked that he was the only private who drove a general's car and commanded his own troop. When his service ended, Norman returned to South Dakota where he farmed and rodeo-ed. He was quite a bronc rider, and rode with the likes of Jack Buschbom and Casey Tibbs and the famous "6 pack" of North Dakota.

In 1947 he met Velma Berg and they were married in McLaughlin, SD at the United Congregational Church on November 25th 1948. They had three children, Dwayne, Audrey and Allan. They were married 67 years, most of that time in Mobridge, South Dakota, the community they loved.
Norman was a jack of all trades working at some time or other as a farmer, a cook ware salesman, a meat cutter, a concrete man, a steel building erector, a sales barn yard man, an explosives man, a truck driver, a city councilman, a heavy equipment operator and also sold thousands of his smoked turkey in over 25 states. Also was a member of the American Legion.

He had a way of figuring the most efficient way of doing things and was almost always quickly promoted to foreman or supervisor. He entered many of the KOLY questions and answered them correctly without the aid of a calculator or computer. He would drive by the sales barn, count how many semi and trailers were there, and then he would go home and figure out how many head of cattle would be at the sale that day.

There were several sayings he believed in like "a good worker can always find work" or "always be worth more that they're paying you" or "if you're supposed to start work at seven and you show up at seven, you're 15 minutes late." He always had a lot of friends mostly because he loved dishing it out almost as well as he loved taking it. A good joke was never lost on Norm.

Norm will be remembered for his kindness and generosity toward others, his pride of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his sense of humor, his smile, and shaking dice – especially shaking "boxcars."

He was preceded in death by parents, Otto and Lydia; son, Dwayne; brother Donald; and sister, Shirley. He is survived by wife Velma; children Audrey (Herman) and Allan; and sisters Virginia (Hinsz), Donna (Rayburn), and Marilyn (Aadlund).
