Obituary

Graveside services for Melvin Schanzenbach, 92, of Mobridge, SD, formerly of McLaughlin, SD, are 3:00 PM, MT, Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD under the direction of the Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be 2:00 – 6:00 PM CT, Monday, September 7, 2015, at the Kesling Funeral Chapel. Melvin passed away on September 3, 2015, at the Golden Living Center of Mobridge.
Melvin was born on February 8, 1923, in McLaughlin, SD, to Henry and Emilia (Aman). He went on to graduate from the McLaughlin High School.
Melvin married Ruth Bickel in 1943 and to this union two children, Kay Ann and Dennis, were born. The two raised their family in McLaughlin. During this time Ruth also operated a beauty parlor out of the family home.
Shortly after marrying Ruth, Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served during WWII from 1944 to 1946.
Upon returning from his military service Melvin remained active in local veteran's organizations. He held many different occupations after his service; he ran a small trucking company, a side business selling used tires, he owned race horses and trained other peoples' horses as well. One special horse was John's Jett, which he named after one of his grandchildren.
In his free time Melvin loved to eat and play cards with his friends down at the Prairie Dog Café. He could also regularly be seen at the local Dairy Queen. In May of 2010 Melvin had the privilege of flying to Washington D.C. as part of a WWII Honors Flight.
He is survived by his siblings, Edna Huber, Irvey (Mary) Schanzenbach, and Seth (Josephine) Schanzenbach; his son, Dennis Schanzenbach and girlfriend Alice Lemon; his son-in-law, Leland Ritchie; his grandchildren, John Schanzenbach, Denise (Donald) Zwolski, Chad (Jondell) Ritchie, Shannon (Duane) Buettner, and Tara Ritchie; his great-grandchildren, Madison Ritchie, Nicole Ahne, and Kaylee Buettner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Emilia Schanzenbach; his wife, Ruth Schanzenbach; his daughter, Kay Ann Ritchie.
