Obituary

Funeral services for Mavis Couture, 83, of Mobridge will be at 10 AM, Thursday, October 13, 2016, at Sacred Word Lutheran Church in Mobridge. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Our "Darling" Mavis Maxine Couture passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 9, 2016. Mavis was born in near Miller, SD on October 3, 1933. She was the 9th child of Dollie (Walton) and Raleigh Nicholas.

Mavis was working as a waitress at the Sereno Café in Mobridge when she first met Gerald "Jerry" Couture. She and Jerry were married on February 1, 1953 in Mobridge, where they lived and had three boys. Mavis worked as the bookkeeper for Jerry's Tire and Radiator, as a scrub nurse in the Mobridge Community Hospital, and at Jerry's Pawn Shop. After Jerry's death, Mavis continued to manage and work at Jerry's Pawn shop until she sold the business and retired.

Mavis lived for her family and friends. She has said often that she "has the best friends in the world" and considered herself lucky to have "such good friends." She loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She could often be heard bragging about any or all of them. Every little kid knew that they would not get away from Mavis without a kiss, hug, and the added title of "my darling". Before she lost her eyesight, she would have never forgotten a birthday, anniversary or any other special occasion of her family or friends. She wanted everyone to feel loved. The only thing she seemed to love nearly as much as family and friends was playing Bridge. She was often in more than one Bridge club before her sight became too poor to play. She unwittingly became a collector of angels, after mentioning how she liked them, and eventually had hundreds of angels, all given to her by family and friends, many of whom considered her their angel at some point in life. She had a sweet tooth her whole life, and felt it was important to always have a box of chocolates or other sweets around, whether for herself or her company. She was an excellent cook and known for many of her recipes. But the most important recipe, that no one could make quite like she did, were her Special K bars. Many, many batches of these have been made through the years and sent to family all over the world.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jerry; brothers Roy, Lloyd, Clarence, Glen, and Roger; sisters Vera Williams and Donna Spiry.

Mavis is survived by her three sons: Gerald Jr "Jay" (Georgia) of Bismarck, ND, Mark (Karen) of Port Richie, FL, and John (Mary) of Omaha, NE; sisters Ruth Capelle of Phoenix, AZ and Marjorie Balliet of Rapid City, SD; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; many wonderful friends.
