Maurice J. Alley, age 90, of Isabel and Spearfish, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on August 23, 2013, at Edgewood Vista in Spearfish, SD. Maurice Joseph Alley was born in Orient, SD, to John and Catherine (Anglin) Alley on March 27, 1923. Maurice's family moved south of Firesteel when he was the age of two and then settled north of Firesteel. Maurice attended grade school at the Warner School south of Firesteel, high school in Firesteel, and graduated from Isabel in 1941. Maurice was also one of the last surviving players of the Firesteel Miners Amateur Baseball team.
Maurice married Madonna Wortman on August 17, 1944, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Isabel. Their first home was a sheep wagon out on the prairie northwest of Isabel, while herding sheep for the entire Alley family. They made their permanent home along Firesteel Creek where they raised cattle, sheep, wheat, children and many memories. Their first child, Richard, was born in 1947, following Richard were Marie, Mike, Pat, twins Margaret and Marcia, Pam, Maureen, Randy and Jackie. They also opened their home to many others including extended family; a nephew, Dale Reich; and a foreign exchange student, Torsten Meyer of Copenhagen, Denmark, who became a member of the family, too.
Maurice and Madonna were active in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Isabel and proud Wildcat fans who could be seen in the bleachers cheering on their children, and eventually, their grandchildren. Maurice's family was his greatest treasure. It was unusual for a grandchild to get away from him without them giving him a healthy five, to which he would respond, "Ow!" One of Maurice's greatest joys was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play around him. A funny face and little jousting weren't an unusual occurrence. He and Madonna traveled many miles to attend graduations, weddings, Baptisms, and other special events for their family.
Maurice and Madonna moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Spearfish, SD, in August of 2012, where Maurice resided until his death on August 23, 2013, surrounded by his wife of 69 years and a handful of his loving family.
Maurice's legacy lives on with his wife Madonna of Spearfish and Isabel, sons Richard (Cora Lee) of Rapid City, SD; Mike (Deb Kullerd) of Nemo, SD; Pat (Marge) of Pagosa Springs, CO; and Randy (Jenifer) of Isabel, daughters Marie (Warren) Podratz, of Minneapolis, MN; Margaret (Dennis) Lindskov, Marcia (Les) Lindskov, Pam (Steve) Locken—all of Isabel, SD; Maureen (Mitch) LaFleur of Rapid City, SD; and Jackie (Keith) Peterson of Lakeville, MN; 38 loving grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren, one sister, Marge (Addie) Beer of Isabel, sisters-in-law, Eileen Becker of Hillsboro, OR; Roberta "Snookie" Alley of Seattle, WA; and a brother-in-law Jim (RuthAnn) Wortman of Cibolo, TX, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings, and a beloved granddaughter, Marcie Jean Locken.
