Funeral services for Mary Lou Shoulder age 71 of Wakpala will be at 11 AM, Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Wakpala Community Center. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A two night wake will start on Saturday with services Sunday at 7 PM at the community Center. Mary passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2015 in Pierre, SD.
Mary Lou Meeter was born to Louis Meeter and Esther (No Heart) in Ft. Yates ND and spent her years living in Wakpala in the winter and riding horseback following her father Louis in a wagon traveling to Blackfoot during spring and summer. She attended the Wakpala school until 8th grade when she quit school to care for her sister Anita (Meeter) Lebeau's children and Ronald Meeter. She adopted Cedric and Ronald and Loren Dallas as her sons. She rode horseback all her life on her favorite horse Major Star until her marriage to Llewellen (Jumbo) Soft.To this union was born her oldest daughter Monica Soft. Then Mary Lou stayed for a time with Wayne Lovelette; to this union was born Althea Meeter. In 1974 she married John Goodhouse. To this union was born Delilah, Arnold, and Nina Goodhouse. She later married Donald Shoulder until his death. They lived in Promise, SD. Mary Lou lived in
various places including Wakpala, Blackfoot, Aberdeen, Rapid City, and last of all Pierre SD Nursing Home. She spent time with her favorite cousins Rena Laframboise and Roselyn Sam. She lived ten years with her niece Carmen.
In 2011, she entered the nursing home in Aberdeen and then transferred to Pierre to be near her grandchildren Esther Goodhouse, Dallas, Junior, Miranda Schroeder, and Trevor Soft. Also her great grandchild, Michael Schroeder; and oldest daughter Monica.
She is survived by three daughters: Monica, Delilah, and Nina and one son: AJ. Also Grandchildren: Miranda, Brittany, Robin, Esther, Melinda, Winter, John, Brandi, Trevor, Autumn, Summer, Samantha, Bridget, Louis, Noel, Douglas, Dallas, Jason, and Tristan. Great grandchildren Michael, Ava, and Kaylace. Her adopted grandchildren: Mariah, Ronny, Alden, and Galen. Also her adopted daughter Carmen, and sons Elroy and
Verlon.
She was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Esther Meeter, two sisters: Anita and Shirley Meeter and one brother Frank Meeter. Also daughter Althea Meeter; adopted sons Ronald Meeter and Ricky Lebeau; Special cousins Rena Laframboise and Roselyn Sam.
Mary Lou will be remembered as a kind, gentle soul. She never drank alcohol or smoked a day in her life. She was a Christian woman always attending church. She could make star blankets and quilts them. She loved her family very much and she will be greatly missed.
