Marvin lived in Akaska and went to elementary school there, but attended high school at Glenham High School. Marvin decided he wanted to be in the military so when he was 17 he dropped out of school and joined the Navy, which was the only branch of the military that would take a 17 year old. He entered the service in 1943 and was honorable discharged in 1947. Marvin earned the rank of gunner's mate 3C and was at Pearl Harbor, the Philippine Liberation, Invasion of Okinawa and the Philippine Islands. He served on the USS Kittson and the USS DYEES DD880.

After Marvin's discharge he did some farming in the Akaska area and managed the service station. Marvin married Esther Elenora Schlect on October 23, 1949 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mobridge. They made their home in Akaska, SD where Marvin worked for Alvin Heier at Sterling Oil and later bought Sterling Oil. In 1956 the city of Akaska bought the bulk station and Marvin managed the elevator and service station. Their 6 children were all born while they were living in Akaska, Ron in 1950, Kenny in 1951, Alan in 1954, Gregory in 1957, Tammy in 1959 and Brad in 1960.

In March of 1966, the Berg family moved to Ipswich, SD where Marvin managed the Co-Op service station for 2 years. He then went to work for Farmland Industries as a field sales specialist. They then moved to Mobridge in 1970 where they have resided ever since. Marvin retired from Farmland in 1986.

Marvin loved his family more than anything and his favorite place to be was wherever they were gathered. He never missed an event when his grandchildren were involved. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and the annual "Berg Pheasant Hunt".
