Funeral services for Martha Berndt, 96, of Herreid will be 2:00 PM Friday, September 7, 2018 at Herreid Baptist Church in Herreid. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Herreid under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A prayer service will be 7:00 PM Thursday, September 6, 2018 at the church. Martha passed away Thursday, August 30, 2018, at the Wishek Living Center in Wishek, ND.

Martha (Naasz) Berndt was born April 26, 1922 to Katharina (Diede) and Ludwig Naasz on a farm six miles east of Mound City, where she grew up with six sisters and three brothers. She was her father's helper with farm chores. She attended a country school near her home through the sixth grade. For a short time, she worked at the Mound City Café for room and board.

Martha met Labolt Berndt at a Christmas program. They were married on September 23, 1941. They lived on farms east and then south of Herreid before buying a farm northwest of Herreid, where they raised five children. Martha helped her husband in the fields and milked cows. She also raised chickens for eggs and meat and canned vegetables from her large garden. She sewed clothing for her children and enjoyed making quilts.

In November 1982 Labolt and Martha moved into Herreid. Labolt passed away October 16, 1993. On October 1, 2010 Martha became a resident at the Good Samaritan Center in Herreid. In July 2018 she was moved to the Wishek Living Center, where she passed away August 30, 2018.

She was a member of the Herreid Baptist Church since 1936.

Martha is survived by her five children, Donna (Ronald) Rossow of Herreid, SD; Judy (Archie) Doering of Springfield, VA; Marjorie (Kenneth) Pudwill of Herreid, SD; Joy (James) Goehring of Ashley, ND; and Steven (Wanda) Berndt of Herreid, SD. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren, a brother, Chester Naasz of Moorhead, MN, and a sister, Lauretta Opp of Pierre, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, seven sisters (two in infancy), two brothers, and two grandsons.
