Mass of Christian Burial for Magdalene "Maggie" Aberle age 91 of Glencross will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Visitation will be Monday, September 8, 2014 at 6PM with a rosary at 7PM at the Holy Cross Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Magdalene passed away, Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Selby Good Samaritan Center.
Maggie was born August 25th, 1923 in Hague, ND to Anton Hummel and Magdalena (Keller) Hummel; she was the fourth of nine children. Maggie moved with her family to South Dakota and attended the Aberle grade school. She married Leo A. Aberle on October 16, 1945 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glencross. Leo and Maggie began their own farm and ranch operation in 1953 when they purchased land southeast of the Aberle family homestead. Maggie had a unique way with babies and she and Leo were blessed with fourteen children of their own. Maggie had a love for all things living and raised many dogs, kittens, chickens, pigs, and baby calves throughout her life. In the morning and evening Maggie would be out in the milk barn tending to the milk cows. She was blessed with a green thumb and in her spare time could be found in her flower and large vegetable gardens. She was also known for her homemade bread served daily and fried chicken for Sunday dinner.
Maggie enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren playing Chinese checkers, card games that she most often won, and coloring with her grandchildren at the kitchen table. Maggie was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Alter Society and later the Holy Cross Catholic Church and Altar Society in Timber Lake.
Maggie is survived by her husband of sixty-eight years Leo A. Aberle of Glencross. She is also survived by her children Pauline Schmidt of Willow Lake, SD, Louise (Robert) Lewis of Manila, AR, Janice (Leslie) Mandernach of Selby, SD, Tom (Diana) Aberle of Glencross, SD, John Aberle of Selby, SD, Joel Aberle of Aberdeen, SD, Mary (Dennis) Simons of St. Lawrence, SD, Harvey Aberle of Billings, MT, Andy Aberle of Glencross, SD, Irene (Wade) Moffat of Piedmont, OK, Jerry (Annie) Aberle of Clear Lake, SD, Kenny (Criss) Aberle, Mobridge, SD, daughters-in-law Lois Aberle, Mobridge, SD, Carol Aberle, Aberdeen, SD, and one sister Rose (Leo) Holzer, Mobridge, SD, twenty-three grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings Alice Aberle, Mary Keller, Catherine Leibel-Prann, Victor Hummel, Jack Hummel, Joe Hummel, Nick Hummel, and sons Leo J. Aberle, Art Aberle and son-in-law Roger Schmidt.
