Madonna Marie (Wortman) Alley, age 92, of Isabel and Spearfish, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on May 22, 2016, in Spearfish, SD. Madonna was born in Firesteel, SD to Frank and Marietta (Morris) Wortman on May 2, 1924.
The parents of both Maurice Alley and Madonna Wortman moved to the Isabel area in April of 1924. Unaware of each other's plans, both families traveled on the same train at the same time from the Orient area in eastern South Dakota. Madonna's family moved to a farm three miles north of Firesteel shortly before Madonna was born. A few years later, the Wortmans moved to a ranch 13 miles northeast of Isabel. After high school graduation, Madonna attended Northern State College where she received her teaching certificate. She then taught at the rural school, known as the Sevrens School.
Madonna married Maurice Alley on August 17, 1944, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Isabel. Their first home was a sheep wagon out on the prairie northwest of Isabel, where Maurice herded sheep. They made their permanent home along Firesteel Creek where they raised their children and many memories. Their first child, Richard, was followed by Marie, Mike, Pat, twins Margaret and Marcia, Pam, Maureen, Randy and Jackie. Madonna and Maurice also welcomed a nephew Dale Reich; and a foreign exchange student Torsten Meyer of Copenhagen, Denmark and considered him part of the family. Friends of her children were always welcome and many had the opportunity to enjoy her hospitality. She had a quick wit and was good with one-liners.
Madonna was active in the Liberty Belles Extension Club and was honored with her 50 year pin. She was also an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Guild, and a founding member of the Isabel Alumni Association. She was a wonderful seamstress making many of her children's clothing in their younger years and in her later years she turned to quilting, a hobby she continued until the end of her life. She loved gardening, and in addition to being an avid quilter, she became the seamstress for many at Edgewood Vista, where she resided the past 3 years.
She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Her home was adorned with pictures of family and friends, especially her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. Madonna hosted many Alley and Wortman family holidays and events over the years, and as her family grew, so did the celebrations. She would rather bake than cook, but not cooking wasn't an option in her large household!
Maurice and Madonna moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Spearfish, SD, in August of 2012, where Madonna resided until her death on May 22, 2016. She made numerous friends at Edgewood and enjoyed playing cards, bingo and visiting with them.
Madonna is survived by sons Richard (Cora Lee) of Rapid City, SD, Mike (Deb Kullerd) of Nemo, SD, Pat (Marge) of Pagosa Springs, CO, and Randy (Jenifer) of Isabel, SD, and daughters Marie (Warren) Podratz, of Nemo, SD, Margaret (Dennis) Lindskov, Marcia (Les) Lindskov, Pam (Steve) Locken, all of Isabel, SD, Maureen (Mitch) LaFleur of Rapid City, SD, and Jackie (Keith) Peterson of Lakeville, MN. She leaves behind 38 loving grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren, one brother James (Ruth Ann) Wortman of Cibolo, TX, sisters-in-law Marge (Addie) Beer of Isabel, SD, Roberta "Snookie" Alley of Seattle, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Madonna was preceded in death by her husband Maurice Alley in 2013, her parents Frank and Marietta Wortman, brothers and sisters-in-law Maurice and Irene Wortman, Wallace and Kathleen Wortman, and Lyle and Martha Wortman, sister and brother-in-law Eileen and Robert Becker, grandson-in-law Jace Waddell and a beloved granddaughter, Marcie Jean Locken.
Memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
