Lynnard "Nard" Keith Spiry Jr. was born on August 24, 1967 at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen to Lynnard & Catherine (Van Vranken) Spiry, Sr. As a young boy, he attended schools in Aberdeen, Barnard and Oakes, ND, where his family lived and worked. Nard had lifelong connections to the Mobridge community and spent endless weekends and school vacations visiting his grandparents (the late Ted and Kate Spiry), playing, fishing and swimming on the banks of Lake Oahe. Eventually, the family moved to Mobridge at the beginning of his sophomore year in high school. Nard graduated from Mobridge High School in 1985. Nard enjoyed being involved in community activities. While living on a ranch in ND, he was active in 4-H, raising livestock for the annual county fair. The family hosted several Japanese exchange students during the summer. While in high school in Mobridge, he participated in football, band and chorus. He was selected to participate in the South Dakota All State Chorus and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Nard enjoyed meeting and helping people throughout his life. As a teenager, he began working at Maher Standard in Mobridge. Customers would stop in to spend a few minutes with Nard. He had a humorous personality that uplifted those around him. The experience fueled his passion for mechanics, leading him to Phoenix, AZ, where he attended and graduated from motorcycle mechanics school. Throughout his young adulthood, he held other various positions in the Mobridge area that included Bridge City Bait, Mobridge Dry Cleaners, Westside Meats, Standing Rock Sanitation and the Highway Department. He did construction work in Utah and Nevada and ranching in Wyoming. But, it was Mobridge that Nard loved and his desire to be around his family, friends and the river eventually brought him back to his hometown. Upon his return, he worked for various trucking companies, Landis Trucking and Thorstenson Trucking. He traveled coast to coast, across the United States. After a long haul trip to Los Angeles, Nard humorously proclaimed, "You haven't lived until you've tried to drive a semi-truck through L.A. traffic." The long hours on the road and separation from his family once again made Nard pine for Mobridge. Eventually, he was hired by the Burlington Northern Railroad, holding many different positions and attending several railroad training courses around the Midwest to hone his skills. At the time of his death, Nard was a track inspector for Burlington Northern.
On October 29, 1993 Nard married Chastity Pfitzer in Mobridge. The couple lived in Veteran, WY until relocating to Mobridge in 1994, where they both found employment and raised their four children.
Nard was well known for his tireless commitment to his family and community. He was a volunteer firefighter and first responder, current secretary/treasurer for the Mobridge Fire Department, vice president of BMWED Lodge 306, vice president of the Northwest Fire District, and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was dedicated with improving the capabilities of the Mobridge Fire Department by actively raising funds to purchase a new 3000 gallon tanker truck, which he strongly believed would increase the fire team's ability to respond to area fires. He loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and looked forward to road trips with his friends and family and attending the yearly Sturgis Rally. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter and he loved cooking meals for large groups of people, especially as a volunteer at the community pancake feed. He was especially proud of a homemade barbecue smoker he and his father Lynn had engineered and welded together out of discarded propane tanks. in the past year. He fondly referred to his barbecue as "Mo Dak Smoke". He excitedly researched barbecuing and meat smoking techniques, tweaking them to a recipe of his own and loved testing his recipes on his family and friends. In a recent conversation with his dad, Nard discussed creating different styles of smokers including one that he could pull behind his Harley Davidson to Sturgis and he also had a vision of building one with a 500 gallon capacity. When his dad asked him what he would do with a smoker that big, Nard just smiled and said he was going to feed the whole town. He was very much involved with his children's lives and made it a point to participate in their school activities near and far. His weekends were filled with attending sporting, musical and academic events.
