Services will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 7:00 pm at Kesling Funeral Home, with visitation starting at 5:00 pm. Lynes was born to Abraham End of Horn and Mary Good Fur in St. Thomas, south of Kenel, SD. As a young child, Lynes lived on the farm of his grandfather William End of the Horn "Hainkpe" in St. Thomas, while the rest of the family lived in Wakpala. Lynes would recall that his grandfather was forced to move his cattle and horses from St. Thomas because of the Pick Sloan Plan which would eventually flood the area, so Lynes and his grandfather joined the family in Wakpala. Lynes lived with his grandfather until he passed away, after which he lived with his parents.
Lynes attended school and graduated from Wakpala in 1963. As soon as graduation was over, an Army recruiter met with Lynes and his parents to sign papers in order for Lynes to enlist, as he was only 17. The very next day he was taken to Fargo, ND by the Army recruiter. After a week in Fargo, Lynes returned home for two weeks before he was shipped off to begin his army career in Fort Bragg, NC. His foreign tours included the US Army Pacific, and the US Army Europe and Africa. Lynes was a 13E2P Cannoneer (Airborne), he received the Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Lynes was honorably discharged as a Buck Sgt. (E-4).
After returning from Vietnam, Lynes attended and graduated from Bismarck Junior College with an Associate in Arts Degree in 1980. Lynes graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1982. Over the next several years, he continued his education at Oglala Lakota College, Northern State College, and Sitting Bull College. He received his SD Teaching Certificate in 2007, and taught school, including Lakota Language, for over 20 years. During this time, Lynes was raising his children, Stoney and Mary. Lynes taught school in many areas, always taking his children with him until they settled in Wakpala.
Lynes was never married, but on the 4th of July in 2000, Lynes met the love of his life, Patricia Carry Moccasin. Lynes' daughter Mary was living in Solen, ND at the time and was working at the Cannonball School. Lynes was living in Wakpala with his son Stoney. Patricia would later join Lynes and Stoney in Wakpala, where they lived for 15 years. Lynes and Patricia moved to Bismarck in 2017, and they remained there until 2021. Lynes had several service-related illnesses, including Parkinson's. When he felt he needed more care, he moved to the Veterans Home in Lisbon, ND on March 1, 2021. On his intake form to the Veteran's home, Lynes indicated that his hobbies were teaching and spending time with his kids. He said he had 5 brothers and 2 sisters. He shared that he enjoyed watching TV and movies, (especially Judge Jerry), and that at one time he had dogs, horses, cats, pigs, chickens and cows. Lynes adapted well and quickly made many friends. Patricia was a frequent visitor to Lisbon and was at his side when he passed away in Fargo.
Lynes will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind, especially his children, his grandchildren, his companion Patricia, his special great-grandsons, Mathias and Grayson.
Lynes was preceded in death by his daughter Nation, his parents Abraham and Mary, his sisters Salina and Luella, his brothers Benjamin, Vincent, Robert, and Merville, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Lynes considered many his "family", and he did have a large family with many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, too numerous to mention. Just know that Lynes loved each of you and he spoke of his many family members often.
