Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Ludwig (Lud) Thomas age 95 of Glencross, SD will be Wednesday at 10:30 AM MDT at Holy Cross Catholic church in Timber Lake. For Brian Christiansen officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Mobridge at 4:00 PM CDT. A prayer service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM MDT at the Church in Timber Lake. Ludwig passed away September 16, 2012 at the Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, ND.

Ludwig Thomas III was born December 16, 1916 in the Karlsruhe, North Dakota area to Ludwig and Theresa (Keller) Thomas. He spent his early childhood in Aberdeen, SD where he attended the Catholic grade school. The family moved to the Glencross area, in west river South Dakota. When the family made their crossing of the Missouri River it was by ferry because at the time there was no bridge across the river. He completed his education at rural school near their home at Glencross. Following his education Lud worked for his father who was a large rancher in the Glencross area along with helping other farmers and ranchers in the area.

On November 24, 1945 Lud married Bernardine Reinbold. Following their marriage they made their home on a farm 9 miles west and 1 mile south of Trial City. This remained their home for the rest of their lives and was were they farmed, ranched and raised their three daughters Joann Fritz, Evelyn Pleinis and Margaret Corner.

Lud loved his farm raising Wheat and Simmental Cattle and enjoyed fishing and was known to enjoy working with horses. As a young man Lud was known to be quite an ice skater and could even carve his name in the ice while skating. Lud and Bernardine enjoyed traveling through out the USA and Canada and spent some of their winters in Arizona.

He was active in the Farm Bureau and the Simmental Cattle Assoc.

He is survived his daughters Joann Fritz of Glencross, SD, Margaret Corner of Castle Rock, CO., and Evie (Roland) Pleinis of Mobridge, SD. Grandchildren, Warren Fritz, Marci Fritz, Terri Hulm, Lonna Schmidt, Jean Hatton and Brandon Pleinis. Eight great grandchildren Henry and Jack Fritz, Crystal Simms, Jake, Lilia and William Hatton, Jace and Kale Schmidt and one brother Bernard (Dorothy) Thomas of Spearfish, SD.

Ludwig was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bernardine, 3 brothers and 4 sisters.

Casketbearers will be Warren Fritz, Marci Fritz, Terri Hulm, Lonna Schmidt, Jean Hatton and Brandon Pleinis.

Honorary casketbearers will be Henry and Jack Fritz, Crystal Simms, Jake, Lilia and William Hatton and Jace and Kale Schmidt.

Special Music will be provided by the Holy Cross Choir the songs will be Prayer of St. Francis, How Great Thou Art, Old Rugged Cross and On Eagles Wings.

Offertory will be by Roland Pleinis and Carlos Vigil.
The Reader will be Brandon Pleinis.
