Funeral services for Lorraine Gunderson, 91, of Mobridge and formerly of Pollock will be at 10 AM, Monday, February 15, 2016 at Pollock Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Kvernes Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be 5 PM Sunday with a prayer service at 7:30 PM at the funeral home. Lorraine passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Lorraine I Gunderson was born in a log house in the old town of Pollock, SD, on June 11, 1924 to Christian and Edith (Quaschnick) Bieber. She attended first through twelfth grade in the old school in the town of Pollock, SD, graduating in the class of 1942. While in school she played basketball and was in the band.
After graduation she worked for different households and businesses. Later she went to work in Linton, ND, at a café for a short time before moving to Bismarck, ND, and working at the Red Owl Store.
She married Arne E. Gunderson on November 10, 1943, when Arne came home on furlough from the Army. In 1944 she joined Arne in Columbia, SC, (Fort Jackson) and later Arne was stationed at Junction City, KS, (Fort Riley). They remained there until Arne was discharged from the Army in 1945. They bought Arne's parents farm in 1945 which is 13 ½ miles south of Pollock, SD.
Lorraine always had a big garden and did a lot of canning. Arne and Lorraine did a lot of fishing; it was their favorite past time. They also loved playing cards and watching football, basketball and golf.
In 1962 they bought Arne's uncles farm two miles west of the home farm. After retirement they spent 17 winters for five months in Arizona. Later they spent 10 years in Sturgis, SD for 5 months in the winter.
In 2004 Arne and Lorraine moved to the Good Samaritan Assisted Living in Herreid, SD. After Arne's death on January 9, 2006 she moved to assisted living in Mobridge where she remained until the time of her passing. She was a member of the Pollock Lutheran Church and church ladies circle.
Lorraine is survived by four daughters, Judith Umber of Mandan, ND, Donna (Kenneth) Rossow of Mobridge, Barbara (Duane) Fjeldheim of Pollock, SD, and Peggy Schmidt of Roanoke, VA, 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Donald and James Bieber, one sister, Violet Rensker, and four sons-in-law.
Casketbearers are Robert Rossow, Jason Baldwin, Steve Rossow, Mark Heltzel, Greg Van Beek and Kenneth Rossow.
