Funeral services for Lloyd Kjellsen, 85, of Timber Lake, SD will be held in the United Parish Church in Timber Lake at 11:00 am MT on June 8, 2019. On Friday, June 7, 2019 there will be a time of sharing at 6:00 pm with a prayer service to follow at 7:00 at United Parish. Inurnment will be in the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Lloyd passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019 surrounded by family at Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Lloyd Andrew Kjellsen was born on February 10, 1934 on the family farm outside of Badger, SD. He was one of 13 children born to Albeck and Marie Kjellsen. He attended country schools until starting high school in Hetland, the year that school was closed. He participated in basketball and football and graduated from Lake Preston high school in 1952. After high school he entered the army for two years and was stationed in New York City for 18 months. He went to all the baseball games he could, and by wearing his uniform, he went free of charge. Lloyd and Janice Olsen were married when he came home from basic training in 1954. They were parents of two girls, Valerie and Cheryl. Lloyd and Janice were later divorced. Lloyd enrolled in Huron College, graduating in 1960 and taught one year in Piedmont. That school closed and he moved to Timber Lake to teach and coach in high school. He said, "I taught for ten years and was a pretty successful football coach. I only had one bad year."
In 1971, Lloyd and Patricia (Humann) Gunderson were married. He liked to tell that he got married on Saturday and bought a grocery and general merchandise store On Sunday. He later adopted Pat's son Mike. They ran the store for 26 years before retiring.
Lloyd was a man of many interests. He was mayor of Timber Lake, Rodeo Association President, treasurer of the American Legion, vice chairman of the board of trustees at United Parish, President of the Better Timber Lake Association, was a school board member, fireman, Mason, groundskeeper at Little Moreau Country Club, Sexton of the Timber Lake Cemetery, and helped with many other organizations. Lloyd was the "voice of football" for over 40 years as the PA announcer. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends and spending time with his family. He was proud to be Godfather to Julie Tolzin Mortier.
He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, two daughters, Valerie and Cheryl, one son, Michael, four brothers, Harvey of Colorado, George (Joan) of Sisseton, Leon of Irene, SD, and Ralph (Becky) of Puyallup, WA; three sisters, Doris (Floyd) Moe of Seattle, Ellen Dinger of Aberdeen, SD, and Rose (Dennis) Tolzin of Lake Preston; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia (Norman) Kempf and Kathellen Lehrkamp (Jerry Hulm); one brother-in-law Vincent (Janet Humann). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Howard and Donald, sisters Florence Larson, Helen Marken and Judy Kjellsen.
