LeRoy Steiger was born May 3, 1924 to Susie (Dupper) and John Steiger on the family farm in Glenham, SD. He was the third of five children. LeRoy graduated from Wayside Country School and Glenham High School, then went back to work on the family farm. He served as a sergeant in the Army in Germany during World War II.
On November 28, 1954, he married Lavern Klein at the United Methodist Church in Selby, and they had four children together. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm ten and a half miles northwest of Selby. LeRoy worked for the State of SD for three years in the ASCS Farm Program covering eleven counties when not busy with farming. LeRoy was a member of the Selby Lions Club, the American Legion, ASCS committees, and a Trustee of the Selby United Methodist Church. He loved his life outside farming and ranching until retiring in 1987. LeRoy moved to Watertown, SD in October of 2006.
In his spare time, LeRoy enjoyed carpentry work, helping his friends and family remodel and finish their homes, and completing woodcrafts with Lavern. He served as Chairman of the Building Committee at Selby United Methodist Church both overseeing and completing much of the finish carpentry work.
A lover of life, laughter and people, LeRoy made friends with everyone. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, leaving a legacy of fond memories and funny stories. Kindness and acceptance marked his character.
