LeRoy received his elementary education at the Roadside School, Logan Township and high school at Herreid High School. He then attended NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND for one year before enlisting in the US Air Force in 1952. During his tour of duty, he was stationed at Parks AF Base in San Francisco, CA and Scott AF Base in St. Louis, MO for training in communications (Electronics) field. LeRoy served at K-9, Pusan Korea in 1954 with temporary duty at various points in Korea and Japan as a telephone repair man. In 1955, he returned to the US and was stationed at the 789 th Communications Squadron (Omaha, NE) where he went back into the "Ground Radio Maintenance" field. He remained there until his discharge on Dec. 1, 1956, reaching the rank of S/Sgt and holding the position of NCIOC (Non-commissioned officer in charge) of radio maintenance.

LeRoy was united in marriage with Arlene Spitzer on December 13, 1953 in Eureka, SD. They went on to welcome two children. Their daughter Debra Lee Sattler (Weisbeck) was born on January 10, 1956 and Kevin Leroy Sattler joined the family on February 16, 1958. LeRroy and Arlene lived on the family farm near Herreid, SD from 1957 until 1964 when he purchased the Standard Oil Agency which he owned until March of 1976. He sold the business after being involved in a car-semi accident. In 1967, he started a commercial crop spraying service which his son Kevin helped operate after the accident. He sold this business in 1987. On April 15, 1979, he accepted the position of Campbell County Highway Superintendent until his retirement in April 1995.

LeRoy and Arlene had planned a European trip for several years. However, Arlene passed away in 1993 after 39 years of marriage before they were able to take this trip. LeRoy toured Russia, Ukraine and Germany during June of 1994. He was able to visit ancestral villages in the Ukraine and met up with relatives which sparked an interest in genealogy.

He enjoyed fishing with his grandkids, gardening, animals, coming to Deb & Ernie's farm for coffee and kuchen, and coffee with his friends in Herreid. LeRoy loved to visit and you would always be greeted with a warm smile. He had a special interest in technology and was up for answering any questions that you may have about it. He had a special friend, Marilyn, with the same interests. He had a bond with animals and was fond of his rescue-dog, Diva and Marilyn's dog Chloe.

After retirement, LeRoy continued living in his home in Herreid, SD until his health diminished. He moved into the Good Samaritan Assisted Living Center in Herreid in February of 2020.
