Jim married Adeline L. Klipfel on Jan. 23, 1950 at Deadwood, SD and lived all their married life in Mobridge except for the time he served in the military. Two sons were born to this marriage James Scott, and Jon Randal. Children were a constant pleasure to follow from diapers to college and on into their respective life styles all their own.
After Jim returned from the Korean Conflict, he and Addie managed the Mobridge Country Club for a period of seven years. In the fall of 1958 they purchased a retail liquor business named the Bottle Shop which they owned and operated until retiring in 1983.
Over the years Jim gave freely of his time and became very active in community and civic affairs. He served the local Chamber of Commerce on committees, as director, and President. He was a member of the Mobridge Rodeo Association and served as director and President. Jim was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church serving as Trustee on the governing Board, as Vice-President, and President. He also served on the Mobridge School Board. He was an active member of the Mobridge Sportsman Club and thoroughly enjoyed South Dakota's hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. Jim was active in the State Wildlife Federation and served as Secretary and President. Jim was a 57 year member of the Parker-Browder American Legion Post #4 of Mobridge.
During his time in the Liquor business he served on the South Dakota Retail Liquor Association as a Director and was named Retailer of the Year in 1977.
In 1974 he was elected Mayor of the City of Mobridge and served for six years. After retiring in 1984 he became active in the Service Core of Retired Executives (SCORE)
performing volunteer business consulting for the Small Business Administration.
During retirement Jim, Addie and Sam (their K-9 companion) enjoyed many miles of traveling over the lower continental United States, Canada and Alaska. They spent several winters as "snowbirds' at Lake Havasu, AZ.
Jim served as Walworth County Commissioner from 1988 through 1996.
In December of 1991, Jim lost his helpmate, constant companion, and beloved wife Addie. To comfort Jim, Addie left the following inspiring words: "Time is a tremendous healer and as months and years pass it is very apparent that the sun keeps rising every day, the world continues to turn, and life goes on. There is always another road to travel, mountain to climb, or discovery to make on the Pathway of Life. Always take time to smell the roses."
On April 12, 1995 Jim married LaVonne (Lari) Aslesen amidst a gathering of all children and grandchildren. This event opened another portion of Life's journey for both of them, They enjoyed traveling together to visit children and grandchildren and the constant Blessing of Life.
Jim leaves this Special Note: upon leaving this world and passing on to the next: God grant that I may live to fish until my dying days, when it comes to my last cast, I then humbly pray, when in the Lord's safe landing net and peacefully asleep in his mercy, "I be judged good enough to keep."
Jim is survived by his wife LaVonne (Lari) Marin of Mobridge, sister Cecelia Purvis of Sumner, Washington, sons; James Scott Marin in Murphy, Texas and Jon Randal Marin in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and grandson Andrew T. Marin of Chandler Arizona.
